A New Toy Mentioned:
http://www.ncsx.com/2007/080607/Tuesday/cheburashka_00.jpg The door flew open, bringing with it the happy sounds of children laughing. Bam looked up and smiled as he watched Esa run over to him. He was laying on the couch with Ville, his head had been resting on Ville’s chest, until the children the came in.
“I home!” Esa cried happily.
“Me too!” Niklas added as he pushed Esa to the side, so he could stand next to his twin.
“Me.” Anya added softly, peeking over the arm of the couch so she could look at her parents.
“You are!” Bam cried just as happily as he sat up, leaning forward to see what the twins had. “Did you have fun at me-maw and pop-pops?”
“Yes!” The twins cried together.
“And you?” Ville asked as he pulled Anya into his lap.
Anya snuggled against Ville, nodding her head as she smiled.
“Good.” Ville said as he cradled her gently in his arms.
They were talking to the twins about what they had done and trying to get Anya to talk about her weekend at Katri and Ryan’s, when they were joined by another person. Elina and managed to crawl over to them, pulled herself up, and babbled loudly as she indicated to Ville and Anya.
“Hello Elina.” Ville and Bam said as Anya and the twins giggled and started playing with her.
“You’re lucky I brought Anya back.” Katri said as she leaned over the back of the couch. “She was an angel to have around.” She added, reaching out to run her fingers through the little girls hair.
Ville and Bam smiled proudly at the little girl, who was hiding her face in Ville’s neck. “She is a joy to have around.” Ville said softly, rubbing her back.
“Not like her smelly brothers.” Bam said as he leaned closer to the twins, sticking his tongue at them.
The twins laughed and cried, “You smelly daddy!”
“Oh I am, am I?” Bam asked as he got up and ran after them.
Ville and Katri chuckled at Bam and the boys. Katri moved around the couch, scooping Elina up when she tried to get closer to Bam and the twins who were wrestling around on the floor. She sat next to her brother on the couch. “How was your honeymoon?”
Ville smiled as Anya, she was peeking at Elina who was trying to get her attention. She would laugh at the slightly younger girl, giggle and hide her face again. It made Elina that much more determined to get her attention, grabbing the end of the other girls dress to yank on as she cried happily. “Wonderful... thank you for your help.”
“You’re welcome... she wasn’t a problem at all. If anything it made me want to have another child around more often.”
“Ooo... does that mean there will be more little Dunn’s running around?” Ville asked with a grin.
Katri chuckled, “Eventually.... right now we are having too much fun with Elina. Not to mention, I’m still in school.”
Ville nodded, “Sounds like you two have thought about it.”
“We talk about everything.” Katri said softly, smiling in reflection of just how much she loved Ryan.
Ville sat up, watching his sister for a moment. “It’s a nice feeling?”
“What?”
“Knowing that you have that connection with someone... that level of trust, friendship, and love. That you can rely on them no matter what?” Ville asked, looking down so he could watch Anya and Elina, who were having some sort of conversation that only they understood.
Katri nodded, “It is a good feeling.”
Ville smiled at her, “It is...”
****
This was a morning that they had been looking forward to with of excitement and sadness. The true emotional impact of it, didn’t hit them until much late on, for as always the morning was busy with activity.
While Bam cooked their breakfast, Ville made sure the twins had everything together. Despite having made sure the kids were up early and that everything had been laid out the night before, everything was slowly crumbling around them.
Esa had actually gone back to bed at one point, while Niklas had gone through his bag and scattered its contents through out the house. Not to be left out of the chaos, Anya decided this was the only morning she couldn’t have anything to do with milk and was throwing a fit because there was no orange juice in the house.
After all three children had been fed, Ville and Bam worked together to get them washed up and made sure they were properly dressed to go outside. It was a crisp early September morning with just a slight chill in the air.
Upon leaving the house, the twins had to be threatened with being grounded from their favorite toys if they didn’t get off the playset and come over to the car. The ride from home was filled with Anya crying over leaving her comfort toy cheburashka and the twins arguing over who was really given the red Spiderman bag and who had the black Batman one.
They walked into the building, Esa holding Bam’s hand, who was holding Niklas’ hand, who was holding Anya’s hand, who was holding Ville’s hand. After checking in at the main office, they walked down a few halls and finally to their destination.
Esa grinned happily as he surveyed the room full of bright colors, toys, and a dozen or so children. Letting go of his fathers hand, he raced away from him and to a group playing with trucks.
“I’m Esa!” The now five year old said as he indicated to himself, sitting down with the other children, helping himself to one of the trucks. The other children introduced themselves as Todd, Michael, and Billy.
Ville watched as Niklas led Anya over to another group of children, who were looking at some books. Like had so many times since her arrival, he sat down with his four year old sister next to him and started looking through books. “I’m Niklas and this is Anya.” He said as he pointed to himself and Anya. “She’s my sister.”
Anya smiled and waved to the other children shyly. They introduced themselves as David, Andrew, Sara, and Katie.
“Hello... My name is Mrs Maxwell.” A pleasent woman of their own age range said to Ville and Bam, walking over to them. “I’m the kindergarten teacher here.”
Bam and Ville smiled and shook her hand. “Bam Margera.” Bam said as he pointed to himself. “My partner Ville Valo.”
“Pleasure to met you.” Ville said.
“Those are our children... Esa over there with the trucks, Niklas over there with the books and our daughter Anya... the blond with the pink corduroy dress.
“Lovely children, I look forward to the coming year with them. I’m sure with your help we can get many things done and in the process help them learn and become prepared for the coming education years.” Mrs. Maxwell said, going on to tell them a little about herself and what she planned to do for the school year.
Once they had finished exchanging information and anything else you would normally do at the this time, Bam looked to the twins and announced they were leaving. After calling to Esa three times, the little boy finally waved vaguely to his father and yelled, “Bye!”
Bam chuckled and looked to Niklas, who at least looked back at them. “Bye Niklas.”
“Bye.” Niklas said, waving to them before he turned his attention back to Anya, handing her a block.
“Come on Anya... we have to go home.” Ville said, taking her hand.
Anya stood up and immediately took Niklas’ hand, who also stood up.
“No.. Niko has to stay here.” Ville said gently as he crouched down. He gazed at her sad eyes and felt his heart break. “Niko has to go to school.”
“No...” Anya said as she looked to Niklas, who was equally upset at this news.
“Can’t Anya stay?” Niklas asked.
“I’m sorry... but she is too little to stay. She doesn’t start school until next year.”
“Remember we talked about this?” Bam put in as he walked over. “You and Esa are big boys now...”
“I want Anya to stay.” Niklas said, holding on to her hand.
“I wanna stay papa.” Anya said, some how managing to make her eyes bigger, they brimed with tears in a way that just made Ville feel worse.
“You can’t stay my darling.” Ville said, frowning more when she started crying.
“Ville...” Bam said, moving closer.
“I know.” Ville said, having come up with a plan with Bam in case this happened. He put his hands under Anya’s armpits and picked her up quickly and immediately started walking out of the room. He held Anya carefully in his arms as she started crying louder, kicking her feet as she screamed, “Niko!”
“Anya!” Niklas yelled, starting to run after them, only to get picked up by Bam.
“Niklas... you will see Anya again in a few hours.” Bam said.
Niklas frowned unhappily. “Who will play wiff her?”
Bam smiled at the innocent concern Niklas had for his little sister. “We’ll make sure she has lots of fun.”
“What if she gets hurt?” Niklas asked.
Bam chuckled, “Are you trying to say me and papa can’t take care of her?”
“It’s my job!” Niklas asserted as he pointed to himself.
“You’re job?” Bam asked.
Niklas nodded firmly. “I’m her big brother.”
Bam smiled proudly at him, “And a great big brother you are. But while you are at school you will just have to trust that me and papa will watch out for her, alright?”
Niklas looked down in disappointed manner. “Ok.”
Bam kissed his cheek, “That’s my little man... now go play with your friends alright?”
“Ok.” Niklas turned around when his brother crouched down and put him down, hugging him as tightly as little boy can. “I love you.”
“I love you too.”
“And papa.”
Bam chuckled, “Papa loves you too.”
“And Anya.”
“Anya does too.”
“And me-maw.”
“Niklas....” Bam said in a slightly warning tone.
“Alright...” Niklas said, giving him one more kiss before he went back to his new friends.
Bam stood up and walked over to the play house Esa was in, bending over to wave to him. “Good bye Esa.”
“Gooood bye!” Esa said in a why haven’t you left already tone.
Bam chuckled and said good bye to the teacher before he left the room. For a moment he stood on the other side of the door, looking in and at the children as they played. He realized then, that his little boys weren’t that little anymore and this was only the first of many good bye that would bring tears to his eyes.
He found Ville and Anya playing on the playground. He had distracted her from the loss of her brothers, by playing tag with her.... she was of course winning.
Instead of getting back into the car right away, they played on the playground for a while. They then took her hands and walked her a few blocks from the school to a nice little resturant to get something special for lunch. After that they did a little shopping and before they knew it, it was time to pick the twins up from school.
However, when they got there, neither one of the twins were very eager to leave. Niklas had to repeatedly asked to put the toys away so he could go. Esa cried when he realized he couldn’t keep the toys he had so much fun with. But over all their first day at school had been a huge success.
It only took a few days for that to change. During one of their getting to know each other activities, Esa had to be put in time-out for hitting one of the other students.
The students were asked to draw and write about their favorite game. At this age there writing would be nothing like conventional methods, but the point was to get them thinking about it and more importantly the explanation of what they wrote.
Esa had eagerly got up and proudly showed his new friends his picture. “I love football!” He said in an excited manner. Of course, his picture was what anyone else who knew about it, was called soccer. But since he loved watching the BBC with his grandparents, he had become used to hearing the British call it football.
When the teacher had pointed out the error in what he had said, he had become quite admient that he was in fact correct. When one of the other students had called him stupid for not knowing the difference between soccer and football, he went over to the other boy and struck him in the head.
Bam and Ville were both amused and yet slightly worried about what had happened. After reminding Esa that we don’t hit each other over things like someone calling him stupid, no matter how mad it made him, they had enjoyed a good chuckle over what they imagined had happened.
Bam even wrote about it in his baby book, under the section for his Kindergarten year. “Today was your first, of hopefully few, trips to the corner. You hit your best friend Billy for calling you stupid because you called soccer football. Papa is worried your becoming more like me. I think that is fine as long as you skip over all that crazy shit that I did between the ages of 13 and 28. Love you-dad!”
A year later, it was Anya’s turn to go to Kindergarten. She had been eagerly awaiting this day since the twins had started, having heard hundreds of stories of the fun they had. She smiled happily all the way down the hall, practically dragging Ville, who was chuckling at her.
It was only when they stopped at the Kindergarten room that her demeanor changed. Ville and Bam exchanged a quick kiss, before Bam kissed her cheek, telling her to have fun and be good. He then disappeared around the corner as he walked the twins down to their room. Anya stood there and watched them leave, the smile falling from her lips.
“Come on Anya.” Ville said gently, ushering her into the room.
She slowly walked into the room, clinging to his leg as she looked around the room in an apprehensive manner. “Where Niko?” She murmured.
“He’s going to first grade now sweetheart... remember?”
Anya looked to the door as she clung to Ville and then away from it when the teacher came over to them.
“Nice to see you again Mr. Valo... how are Esa and Niklas doing?”
“Excited to be in the first grade.”
“I bet... and looks like we have a new friend for our class.” She said gently as she looked to Anya.
Despite knowing Mrs. Maxwell from her brother being in the class, she hid her face in Ville’s shirt.
Ville gazed down at his daughter in a concerned manner, placing his hand on her head. “We’re having some separation concerns.”
“It’s alright Anya, we’re going to have lots of fun together.” Mrs. Maxwell said as she tried to get Anya to look at her.
“No!” Anya cried, which was mostly muffled by the fabric on her face.
“Anya...” Ville said gently.
“I want Niko and Esa!” Anya cried, her cheeks turning red as she looked up at her father.
“I know precious... but they are in a different class now.” Ville said gently, crouching down so he could look at her.
Tears ran down her cheeks as she looked between her father and Mrs. Maxwell, her bottom lip trembled as much as she did. “You can stay.” She pleaded.
“I can’t sweetheart...I’ll be back soon...I promise.” Ville said, which seemed to make her more upset. “Here...look what I brought with me.” Ville said, reaching into his bag, pulling out her cheburashka.
Anya took it and hugged it close to herself, crying still as she looked to her father.
“Oh wow that is a really neat toy Anya... can you tell me about it?” Mrs. Maxwell asked, hoping to distracted Anya from Ville leaving. It took some effort, but Anya finally let go of Ville’s pant leg and turn to look at her.
Ville, who was on the verge of crying himself, slowly started backing away. He jerked when he felt someone touch his arm, letting out the breath he was holding when he saw it was Bam. His husband took his hand quickly pulled him from the room. No sooner had the door shut, but there was a familiar cry when Anya realized he had gone.
Bam could see how upset Ville was and tried to offer Ville some comfort, but Ville pushed away from him and ran to the nearests bathroom to throw up in the toilet. He only expelled a little before going to the sink to rinse his mouth off.
“Are you alright?” Bam asked softly.
“I feel like shit.” Ville said as he stood up and looked to his partner.
Bam smiled, “Yeah, Niko and Esa weren’t too happy when they realized that Anya was not going to the be in the same room as them this year either.”
Ville nodded, “I feel like I’ve done something wrong.. did I shelter her too much?”
“You did nothing wrong Ville... Jess went through the same thing with his kids. Neither one of them were very happy their first days in school. Anya will be just fine... if anything....it might be good for her to get out of the house and make more friends.” Bam explained.
Ville nodded, taking Bam’s hand as they walked out of the building. “I hope you’re right. I love our children and I don’t want to think I’ve done anything, in the process of trying to show them affection, that would hurt them.”
“I’m sure you didn’t love. Anya will be just fine.. I’m sure of it.”
Ville smiled, “And for the next several hours, we’re all alone.”
Bam grinned as he unlocked the car doors, as soon as they were inside of it, he responded to Ville’s comment. “I say we get naked, make popcorn, and watch Casablanca.”
Ville chuckled, “That’s not what expected you to say.”
“Well that’s why I added in the naked part....I know how you get when you watch those movies.” Bam teased, chuckling when Ville blushed. “Don’t deny it.”
“You know me too well.”
“Even if we don’t fool around, I love the feeling of your body against mine.” Bam said as he started the car and carefully left the parking lot. “That in itself is a wonderful feeling.”
“Aww....so sweet....” Ville said, giving Bam a quick kiss before adding, “And the popcorn?”
“Well...I’m hungry.”
