It came rather suddenly but today we laid to rest our tuffet crumb terrier, Fratzi, age sixteen. There is more to say but not now.

Finding the occasional snake in our basement is fairly routine, nearly always on the floor. I did once find one coiled behind some conduit descending from the ceiling to a light switch I was reaching towards but that was exceptional. Today was even more exciting. The first of the year's driveway daffodils bloomed last weekend, rapidly followed by many runner-up clumps, and by now they line the way in full bloom. We have idly wondered if the display momentarily brightened the day for some commuters as well as cheering ourselves and visitors to the house. We have had a bluebird house up for years and never any bluebirds, only year after year of evicting sparrows and the like. Last year our luck changed when a pair of tree swallows moved in. Not bluebirds but still a species that deserves help in nesting accommodations.
