Winter Solstice and Christmas?

Dec 29, 2004 14:37

There was a debate on some of the Christmas traditions that we have today (holly, ivy, mistletoe, yule log, the giving of gifts, decorated evergreen tree, magical reindeer, etc.) was either Christian or Pagan. I am not saying anyone is right or wrong but it seems that Christian's Christmas pretty much merged with traditions of Winter Solstice to ( Read more... )

lol the whiners did finally shut up after ppl told em off cuz ya. It's pretty obvious that winter solistice has been around a long time and is the basis for the holiday celebration. I'm not trying to be prejudice, but it was a really ignorant Jewish kid that was upset cuz he saw 'christian connotations' thru the holiday decor inthe game. puhfricken lease. ppl told him to go back to school.

:D remember that one stop animation (like rudolph?) but it was about the myth of santa claus, jack frost and the coming of winter? I thought that was really cool. Wonder if I can get the DVD.

Yeah the kid should have not complained. If anything the only things in WOW that I saw were a few stringed lights and a goblin dressed up like Santa Claus. That's like nothing!

opps my bad! But yeah they went out of their way to not name him Santa Claus or even St. Nicholas (which I can see might cause an uproar). The red and white costume is pretty much made up, I mean St. Nick didnt wear fuzzy white and red clothes like today's Santa.

As a Christian, I also don't like it when people say that Jesus was absolutely born on Christmas Day. Christmas Day was chosen as the day to observe Christ's birth because it was already a holiday. It's to observe His birthday. He wasn't actually born on that day.

Just cause I have my birthday party on a Saturday so it's easier for people to come to doesn't mean I was born on that day. Sheesh.

I'm glad that so many of the Christmas traditions we have come from different cultures. =)

Yeah he was not born on the 25th I think I remember reading it somewhere that his actual date of birth is still unknown but it was acutally unlikely to be December? People need to re-examine their facts I guess.

Yes I am very glad that Christmas can be celebrated by all, as it has so many different origins! ;D

I think whats sad about today that a lot of people are not open minded about different people and culture's and religions and everytime something looks jesus friendly to them they freak out. I'm a christian but I am not a labeled (protestant, babtist, etc.) Christian and I am very open minded about all religions and think that each religion we could learn so much from. Christmas is Christmas! To each person there's a different reason why they celebrate it. We shouldn't focus so much on the orgin of Christmas just focus on what it means to you. This wow forum is a video game thing right? So yea it's just too bad that they have nothing else to do but complain about nothing.

We had to look into the origins for Christmas in order to make the complainers see that tree decorations and strings of lights is not a Christian tradition. It was adapted from winter solstice from the pagans.

I don't doubt the fact that there are other winter holidays that coincide with Christmas whether they are on the exact same day or close to the day when Christmas is celebrated. I think that Christmas holds a different meaning for everybody depending on what you believe in ( ... )

Yeah they say that it was originally called "Christ mass". It's obviously Christian based. I forget the Roman Empoeror that decided on the date but basically he knew that people at the time still believed in Pagan traditions of winter solstice and what not so he decided to make it one day for everything therefor not upsetting either side, which I think was very wise. That is why today, many cultures and religions celebrate Christmas together.

ya so in World of warcraft, it's called ''the winter Veil''. and it's pretty much a winter solistice celebration. there is no hit of the word 'christmas' anywhere in the game, just to be P.C. or else Blizzard would be sued.

I dunno but people these days dropped the word 'winter solistice' in favor of 'christmas'. but it's basically the same thing. Some P.C. people still call it winter solistice though.
