Winter Solstice and Christmas?

Dec 29, 2004 14:37

There was a debate on some of the Christmas traditions that we have today (holly, ivy, mistletoe, yule log, the giving of gifts, decorated evergreen tree, magical reindeer, etc.) was either Christian or Pagan. I am not saying anyone is right or wrong but it seems that Christian's Christmas pretty much merged with traditions of Winter Solstice to form what we now know today as "Christmas" of giving gifts and decorating houses and trees and feasting. I don't think it's entirely accurate if people claim that Christmas today is "Christian only" based holiday because obviously if you read Pagan history a lot of Christmas traditions are actually from winter Solstice. Either way, people believe that both celebrations is to bring "darkness to light" (as well as other Religious December Holidays) which I think is a very fitting theme for the holidays in December for the world. People on the WoW forums need to get over it and just see that Christmas today is really a combination of many many different traditions and beliefs.
