Hunter, the Husky

My son's Alaskan Husky had fun in the snow today. We only got 1" of the 1 to 3" expected but I was still glad to finally see some. Still hoping for a big snow.

Cold Weather CanineWhen my son tried selling me on the idea of keeping this dog, he said the dog never barked. I have since found out why. That breed prefers to howl. He often sends me ( Read more... )

Hey! If I get a Gryffindor scarf, it's gonna be for ME! :D Actually I do want to buy one like they wore in PoA. And my son needs some new ties so I think I'm going to find him a scarlet/gold striped one. *g*

Love the dog pic!

From what I understand, cold weather dogs dig so much because they can dig themselves a little hole to sleep in which is warmer than sleeping out of a hole. This is compared to terriers who go to ground and dig to chase vermin. Anyway, we had a cold weather dog once that dug lots of holes. I warned him about digging dog body sized holes. Told him he was digging his own grave.

I couldn't resist dressing him up a little. He looked silly in a hat but I thought he carried off the scarf quite well. :P Poor dog! I don't know if they're mental when they get here or we make them that way.

I noticed in the fall that he would sleep in the holes he dug. I thought maybe the cool earth helped him fight the heat. And yes, it would be dangerous for him to dig a hole to fit a 100+ lbs. dog. That would just be asking for it. I think he's too huge to be pure Husky; I think there's some Malamute in the mix.

We had a purebred Husky when I was little. Dad brought him home as a little puppy, so we had him from as early as was safe for him. He didn't bark the first six months so we literally got down on the floor and barked at him until he learned, which took a few weeks. He was so funny trying to bark back but just coming up with a little, low growl. Eventually, he got it, and shortly we were sorry ( ... )

This dog is excellent with children and cats. He really does have a good disposition and I'm sure that howling is his version of Kumbaya or something. :P ( ... )
