V. Perfect Blue

You are ready.

"No."

Yes, you are ready.

"It's too early."

No, it's not too early. You have been ready for weeks but too scared to act on it. I won't lend my power to a coward. You are ready.

Hitsugaya looked at the huge ice dragon standing in front of him. He had been able to materialize him for almost a month, but had not been able to gather the reiatsu needed to release his Bankai form. He didn't want to admit it, but he was scared. Everything had happened too fast.

Do it.

He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Don't think about anything; don't think about all those Taichous looking at you right now. Don't think about Aizen-taichou looking at you, he reminded himself.

Focusing his attention, Hitsugaya started releasing reiatsu, feeling the hum of the energy gathering around him and the excitement coursing his veins. This time he was sure he was going to make it. When he opened his eyes again the world was bright blue, and the only presence he could see was that of Hyorinmaru staring at him.

"Bankai." His voice rang clear and loud in the middle of the deafening silence surrounding him. "Daiguren Hyorinmaru."

He looked at his hand, encased now on ice and arched an eyebrow. Wow. He could feel the cold from the ice distantly and there was a strange weight on his back. Looking he saw two ice wings attached to his back, and curious, flexed them. He wasn't really expecting to take flight, and he looked at the ground getting further away from him with a sense of awe.

I told you. But you still have much to learn.

Feeling the corners of his mouth tugging up, Hitsugaya descended again.

A Taichou.

He couldn't believe it. A Taichou so soon. He hadn't even finished his instruction, and he already had a Division waiting for him to lead. It was too much.

Hitsugaya looked around at the plain expanse of earth where he had demonstrated his Bankai for the rest of the Taichous of the Gotei 13. Had he known what they wanted from him he would have never admitted he was ready for it.

"It's all your fault," he complained loudly, even though he knew Hyorinmaru could hear him without voicing his thoughts.

"Mine?" A voice behind him startled him, and he turned to see Aizen standing there, just looking at him with a small smile playing on his lips.

Hitsugaya blushed. "No, sorry, Aizen-taichou," he muttered, not knowing why he always felt like that around the other man. "Hyorinmaru's fault. He insisted I was ready."

"And you were."

Hitsugaya looked down. "I know, but I don't want to be a Taichou, not yet."

No, what he had wanted was to finish the Academy and request to be assigned to the 5th Division to learn more, and to be next to his friends.

"But you are going to be," Aizen said, approaching him until they were side by side.

"I am going to be," he said.

They stayed like that for a while, not saying anything, just standing there side by side. Hitsugaya had wondered lots of times how it was possible that he felt so comfortable with the other man, ever since the time they met he had felt drawn to Aizen.

"But you need to learn some things first, Hitsugaya-taichou," Aizen said, smiling down at him.

Hitsugaya scowled annoyed, "Don't call me that, Aizen-taichou," he said.

Aizen's smile widened, "But it's your proper title now," his eyes shone mischievously, "or would you rather I can you Shiro-chan, like Hinamori-kun does."

Hitsugaya growled, and Aizen laughed.

"For the next two months, Hitsugaya-taichou," Aizen said, "you're going to be training under me."

He perked up at that. "Training?"

"Yes, you don't only need to learn how to control your Zanpakutou; you need to learn how to run a Division."

Aizen approached even more, until their bodies were almost touching, and he leaned forward. Hitsugaya couldn't take his eyes off him, wondering why he was coming so close to him and at the same hoping he would get even closer. A hand touched his face and he realized Aizen's face was just inches away from his.

"Your eyes looked so blue and bright before, so much power," Aizen said, his voice sending a thrill down Hitsugaya's spine, "you need to learn how to control it before it controls you. I can teach you that."

And before he knew it, the touch was gone and Aizen was getting away from him. Hitsugaya stood there, looking at him while Aizen excused himself and went back to his own division.

I don't trust him.

"Shut up."

He was not going to admit, not even to Hyorinmaru, that for a second he had expected the short distance that separated them to close.
