okay so this wound up not really addressing 75% of this prompt. Sorry. Hope you enjoy anyhow, OP.August 18, 1967 ( ... )

However, the Searchlight complex had the necessary accommodations for the subject. Heads of mutant research have long been resistant to terminating DEU-K-00009 for the subject's considerable worth in genetic research. In vitro impregnation of human oocytes with semen harvested from the subject consistently results in zygotes with mutant DNA, a stunning figure given the standard 56% success rate. Studies on this subject could certainly provide considerable insight to the factors which cause mutants to be formed in otherwise healthy families. Indeed, for the worth as genetic stock alone, one could argue DEU-K-00009's worth. Within the Searchlight facility, however, this writer discovered a secondary use for the mutant; and may have unlocked the secret to utilizing its powers within an experimental setting. The observational data (Attachment C) will assist in the board members' understanding of the further uses of DEU-K-00009 within our research ( ... )

After we allowed group dynamics to settle, we found quickly that where use of the C6-290 collar on GB-M-00001 failed, concurrent usage on USA-P-00020 and DEU-K-00009 succeeded. GBR-M-00001 began regular operation of Searchlight technology on June 12th. The benefits of this project have been far-reaching and innumerable, from the significant public safety measure of widespread containment of M-type mutant youth to the recapture of the military's CAN-P-00001. Few outside the facility are aware of the impact DEU-K-00009 had over these proceedings: though the subject continued with violent actions and ideations toward human staff, it appeared to show protective and at times nurturing behaviors toward its mate. Staff were even able to succeed where twenty years of research on this subject could not: we finalized a comprehensive study on DEU-K-00009's powers in July, after utilizing the C6-290 extensively on GBR-M-00001 ( ... )

Arguing for DEU-K-00009's continuation as an experimental subject is rather more difficult. That day has brought us up to thirty-four American fatalities at the powers of this mutant, and DEU-K-00009 is young yet. However, my colleagues and I have observed an increase in withdrawn and depressive behaviors in GBR-M-00001, and it is our concern that the termination of DEU-K-00009 would only compromise the Searchlight project further. We are not aware of many things regarding the mating of mutants, and of M-type mutants in particular. The telepathic mutation may create circumstances in which permanent mental connections are made with other mutants--connections that may lead to fatalities in M-types at the death of their mates. I would like the opportunity to research this group further, with the permission of the board ( ... )

Thanks! And thanks for overlooking failures in my terminologies, haha (I'm pretty sure you fertilize oocytes, not impregnate them... but heeey it's been a bit since my bio courses). XD

Holy fuck. This is amazing. The epistolary format works very well here: it says a lot about the utter dehumanization our little band of X-Men are facing, without actually showing us the specifics. My blood ran cold at two points: the mention of the tattoo (FFS, do these people have no self-awareness at all about what they're doing? How they're no better than those who forced that tattoo on Erik?), and when I read who exactly is writing this letter. To echo the above commenter: oh, Hank.

Henry Philip McCoy, PhD.
Research Lead

...I was not expecting that.

Horrible and heartbreaking and so well done in portraying so much wrong through otherwise neutral academic language. Amazing.

Holy Geezus Son-of-a-Gun...

That was incredibly, fantastically clever and well-constructed. And terrifying. And horrible. But all in a good way. I could barely breath through most of it, and then the last line just about stopped my heart. Well-friggin'-done. *slow clap*

Christ, anon, this was incredible! The format is a very original and elegant take on the mutant captivity/experimentation trope and the language is so precise and clinical, but hints at so many awful details.

This may just be the most amazing fic I've read in this fandom so far. Bravo!

Holy crap! I was reading this whole thing thinking, "This is amazing, totally amazing!" and then I got to that last line and it was like a punch in the gut. INCREDIBLE JOB.

...Henry McCoy?

Excuse me while I go cry.

(THIS IS FANTASTIC! OMG, AND HANK BEING THE JACK-ASS RESEARCHER JUST RAMMED IT HOME, ANON, WELL DONE! IT IS GLORIOUS AND EPIC AND OMG, WILL THERE BE MORE? BECAUSE I WOULD BE ON THAT LIKE WHITE ON RICE!)

Oh my sweet fuzzy lumpkins, this is PERFECT! The language and code names and everything are so chillingly authentic! You say so much in so little and the little details are so poignant and unstated:

It was hoped, initially, that the introduction of DEU-K-00009 may result in the eventual impregnation of USA-P-00020 (an event which has since been brought about by artificial insemination from USSR P-type stock)

Oh Raven. (I hope to God that they let her and the rest of the family raise Kurt!)

where use of the C6-290 collar on GB-M-00001 failed, concurrent usage on USA-P-00020 and DEU-K-00009 succeeded.

Raven AND Erik??? Poor Charles!

we finalized a comprehensive study on DEU-K-00009's powers in July, after utilizing the C6-290 extensively on GBR-M-00001.

My God, I don't even want to imagine. And Erik was already so angry and frightened, and to have Charles be the cause of his cooperation!

That one of the undergraduate researchers erroneously believed the presence of DEU-K-00009 in the main test complex would encourage rapid ( ... )

Thank you, OP, for the prompt and the great reply. I'm glad you enjoyed!

I hoped to leave Hank's motivations a bit vague, but... I gotta admit, I probably only had this fill in my brain for two seconds before Hank became the obvious choice as a researcher.

And re: a sequel... For some reason, for now my brain appears to only supply me with ideas concerning characters writing essays on this stuff, and it's not even Erik or Charles writing? Thanks brain.
