SVH Super Edition: Jessica Takes Manhattan

Aug 16, 2008 00:21

Well, after whining on in the comments the other week about North London charity shops being SVH-free zones, in my local one today I picked up not one, but two SVH books. What's more, they were 20p each, which makes me think that the dude who runs the shop read them and priced them according to their literary value. So, mystery donator of Highbury ( Read more... )

You know it's gonna be a stinker when ANYONE not actually designed and created by Jim Henson tries to 'take' Manhattan.

Very true. Although a Muppet version of Sweet Valley is something I would definitely take interest in.

Oh, man, I was literally just about to post my own write-up of this one! I guess I'll wait a week or two so that there aren't two recaps of the same book in a row. You did a fabby job recapping this. :D

And a confession: I kind of like this book. I'm a sucker for escapism stuff!

Oh noes! Sorry for treading on your toes. Please post up your recap soon, I'm sure you did a much better job than I did.

No fear about liking the book. One of my favourites is the SVT War Between The Twins, so I am not one to judge.

No, it's totally cool. Great minds think alike, am I right? :D

And, to be honest, there were some fairly eye-roll-worthy parts to the book. I love how the entire Princess Charlotte subplot is essentially the result of Francine Pascal saying, "Hey! What if we stole the storyline of Roman Holiday, but instead of making it a charming tale of fledgling romance and personal growth, we had Audrey Hepburn's character work in a soup kitchen?!"

"Lila is appalled that Princess Charlotte pretended to be her while wearing rubbish jeans."

Lila has more taste than the princess of your average pretend European country. Go, Lila!

Well, she's not the Queen of Sweet Valley for no reason.

Oh man, this book makes me nostalgic for when I started university (yes, I still read Sweet Valley then. I only stopped when I got a job at a bookshop and had constant access (with discounts) to more mature materials, only to promptly start up again when I discovered thedairiburger and this comm.)

It turns out to be a mechanical fault, and the plane has to make an emergency landing in New Orleans. Jessica deals with this in a typically squealy manner

I dunno, I haven't been a fan of the words "mechanical fault" or "emergency" either since I read The Sleepwalker. Fuck you, Robert Muchamore.

Oh yeah, we also learn that Lila has been seeing Bo since the previous summer vacation, which I believe leads us to the question as to why she was going home with John in the first place.

That summer vacation was before their 15th time through junior year, the encounter with John was in their 8th. Duh. :P

She turns on the TV and sees that Jess’s flight had to land in New Orleans.Exactly how bad was this fault that it got on TV? Cause I'm ( ... )

Ha. It's not explained why on earth they would land in Louisiana, I also found it a bit odd but, as with most things Sweet Valley, found it easier to roll eyes, accept it and move on. As for the TV coverage, one can only presume it was a slow news day over the entire country.

Never, ever have snacks when reading a Sweet Valley recap. Lots of lols can cause foodal chokage. (The spelling of that looks way off.)

Lila and Bo go to Greenwich Village for coffee, does that mean they went to Central Perk?

Another lookalike, another rock star falls for a Wakefield and another Princess pretends to be 'normal' and works in a soup kitchen. Very original.

Jessica runs of when Ryder announces he is getting engaged. Good call, judging form what happened last time she got involved with an engaged guy.

This was such a WTF book. Thanks for the funny recap.

I wondered if they would go to Central Perk! "Could this princess BE any lamer?"

Glad you enjoyed the recap! I have another SV book to be getting on with, but have discovered that it is the last in the Flair series so not sure if its even worth doing without the other two, especially as the series has already been brilliantly recapped by and .
