"Way too smart, asking questions she already knows the answer to," Kirin nodded in agreement. "It's not my fault I don't know French, but I do know that a sous chef is an assistant chef, so there."
He stuck his tongue out in the direction of the Christmas tree and the little girl hiding beneath it.
"Do you think they'll make it back in time for Christmas?" April asked before resuming the song she had been singing earlier. She was full of questions she knew the answers of that night. Only she asked Santa many times and she'd been mostly good, maybe he'd surprise her.
Hearing the underlying sadness in Kirin's voice, Jamie kept quiet, tightening his hold on the other man. He never knew what to say when April asked about Jimmy and Candice. Nothing seemed to be right, and 'I don't know' always seemed so unfair. But it was the truth. It had been six long months without word from their friends and, though he'd never say so to either April or Kirin...
April wrapped her arms around Chewy, her singing muffled by the dog's fur for a moment. Her voice was the only thing she heard for a verse, her and Chewy's panting. "Can I open a present tonight?"
