So, my first day as a volunteer teacher went pretty darn well.  There are about ten regulars in my M/W class (not sure about the T/Th one yet), and they all seem to be working hard.  One is clearly in over her head and one is just so busy that apparently he aces about half the tests and fails the other half.  Other than that, they're all varying ( Read more... )

Not too much to say yesterday and today.  Yesterday was an inservice day for the staff, which is called "Independence Day" for the residents.  They make it very clear that this is not a day off; you're expected to do things that have to be done but are difficult to achieve on class days or weekends.  So I filled in more possibilities for the Texas ( Read more... )

Wednesday was a critical fail for Capital Metro.  Putting maps for routes other than the one you're riding but not the one you're riding on the bus?  Fail.  No electronic stop announcer?  Fail.  Bus driver who doesn't know the names of the streets he stops at?  Fail.  Bus driver who talks on the radio to people at HQ and completely forgets I needed ( Read more... )

Like I said, Thursday was somewhat eventful.  We had visitors in from the state library for the blind to talk about the transition from four-track cassettes (recorded in mono; you'd play side one, then flip it over, then flip a switch and turn it over again to get sides 3 and 4 on the "right" tracks) to digital media ( Read more... )
