“Ryu! You’re here again?”
“Ah, hello.” Kamiki nods as the man walks in with a bouquet of flowers on his hand.
“You’re such a great friend. I’m sure Mayu-chan would be happy if she knows.” Shoon smiles, his eyes are red from the lack of sleep, and he is much skinnier than before. Shoon’s health seems to degrade ever since Kei’s death and Fukuda’s fall.
“Oh this?” Noticing his stare, Shoon points to his eyes as he takes off his scarf and coat, “I was up late studying for my exam. I have to take the bar exam soon you know. So I’m better be prepare now, while I’m young and able.” Looking around, “Tsutsumi-san hasn’t come yet?”
“He said he’s going to be late again.” Kamiki answered, “Looks like he has another case.”
“Ah, I see.” Shoon smiles, “This reminded me of Kei. He was always out on cases and stake...” His lips drop as he turns to Kamiki with an apologetic expression, “Ah, I’m sorry.”
“No, it’s alright.” Kamiki said. He already put all those feelings aside long ago. Kei is already dead, and he didn’t want to stay mad at the person that saved Fukuda’s life, twice.
Kamiki sits back down to the seat next to the bed. Laying on it is Fukuda, looking as if she’s sleeping.
“It has been 5 months hasn’t it?” Shoon sits down opposite of him and holds her hand.
“Yes.” Kamiki answered, “She’s still like this, even though it has been 5 months. I wonder why she won’t wake up?”
“That’s just like her. Always running from her problems.”
“But...” Kamiki turns to Shoon, confused, “She’s not that type of person. She never run away from problems before. At least I’ve never seen her do it.”
“Of course not.” Shoon laughs, “If it’s someone else’s problem, she doesn’t run away. She even butt in and try to solve it. But if it’s her own problems, all she does is run away. The first time I met her, she was also running away from home. Imagine, a little girl drench with a backpack on her shoulder and an equally drenched puppy on her arms. It’s quite a sight.”
“But she is always so distant to everyone, and so hard to approach. I always thought she hates to associate herself with other people.”
“Well, I don’t think it’s only that.” Shoon sighs as he gently strokes the head of the sleeping girl, “It’s not that she hates to associate with people. It’s that she really loves everyone. No, maybe it’s more than that, it’s because she hates herself.”
“Huh?” Kamiki looks at the man in confusion.
“It’s because she hates herself the most in this world, that’s why she can’t hate anyone else.” Shoon chuckles and turns to Kamiki, “None of it was her fault, but ever since her mom died, she probably thought it was her fault that the person she loved died. So she doesn’t want to be like. Maybe that’s why she distanced herself from everyone. But this happened, and then Kei... Maybe that’s why Mayu-chan didn’t want to wake up because of that. It’s silly isn’t it?”
In the same hospital, a few months ago, Kamiki remembered the first time she showed him her true emotions. Even back then, she was probably crying for help inside, but he didn’t get it then. Because he was always surrounded by love and happiness, he didn’t know that there are those that can contain such painful emotions inside of them. And that person is so close to his life.
Kamiki looks at Fukuda. Stripped off of her usual stern expression, she looks helpless. She’s like an angel that fell from heaven and unable to go back. Being forcefully shoved into the world of mortal, and reluctantly have to adapt to it and all its fault. Yet, she could only blame herself for being in this state.
“Such a silly girl.” Kamiki whispered under his breath. Reaching out, he holds her cold hand, “Mamayu, why don’t you wake up?”
“So you finally call me by ‘Mamayu’.”
…
“You’re here!” Kamiki breathes as he sees the girl he was looking for, casually sitting in a wheelchair on the rooftop of the hospital. There is nobody around. She glances at him and turns back to the scenery in front of her.
“I was looking for you all over.”
Instead of giving him a reply, she sneezes.
“Kamiki takes off his coat and wraps it around her body, “Silly girl. It’s almost winter you know. You could have caught a cold.”
“Thanks.” She quietly said, but her eyes are still far away, “I didn’t realize that you’re such a reliable guy.” Kamiki can’t help but grin at her compliment. It’s rare for him to hear her say anything nice.
“Well what is it?”
“Huh?” Kamiki scratches his head, “Oh... Erm, I was just worried.”
“Did you think I’m going to jump?”
“No!” Kamiki shakes his head, “Nothing of the sort.” But that was far from the truth. Shoon decided to tell her of the news about Kei earlier, but she was expressionless throughout. All she did was nodded and didn’t say anything else. When Kamiki found her disappeared, the thought did cross his mind.
“Oh really?” As if reading his mind, Fukuda smirks.
Both of them become silent, not knowing what else to say.
Then, as quiet as the air itself, “Before I woke up, I had a long dream about Kei.”
“Oh...”
“He told me that it wasn’t really my fault.” Fukuda continues, “He told me that the reason why people around me got hurt has nothing to do with me. That I should wake up, and that people are waiting for me.”
“I see...”
“But when I did, I learned that Kei died because of me.” Fukuda’s head lowered as her voice quivers, “Even in a dream, he still lied to me.”
“His death isn’t your fault.” Kamiki quietly said. He didn’t want to talk about the dead man.
“If only I didn’t jump, then he could have live.” Fukuda protested.
“You’re right!” Kamiki nodded, “You really shouldn’t have jump.” Fukuda looks at him guiltily. “If you didn’t jump, then that man could have been in jail, paying for all the crimes that he’s guilty of. You are really stupid, you know that?”
“I’m sorry.” Fukuda lowered her head again, tears are already dripping onto Kamiki’s coat, “I’m sorry.”
Kamiki stoops down and wraps his arms around her in an embrace, “But I’m glad you’re back. I’m really glad you’re back. When I heard of the news, I was so afraid of losing you forever. Even though I hate that man, but I’m so thankful for him. If it’s not for him, I won’t be able to see you again.”
“Ryu?” Fukuda looks at him, awkwardly.
He gently pulls away from her, gazing at her with his red eyes, “I was afraid that I will never be able to tell you that... I like you.”
“What?” Fukuda stares at him in shock.
“I like you.” Kamiki repeated, though this time, he could feel the heat going to his face.
Instead of being happy like he thought she would, Fukuda uses all her strength to push him away, causing Kamiki to fall to the ground.
“What the heck are you saying?” She glares at him in anger, “Do you know what you’re saying?”
“Well, yes.” Kamiki said, “I said I like you. What’s the problem?”
“EVERYTHING!” she yelled, “Why are you telling it to ME? What about Shida-san? Why are you cheating on her?”
“But... I already broke up with her.” Kamiki stammered, confused at her sudden outburst, “It has been more than 5 months, so I think it’s okay if I move on.”
“But... Why? I thought you really like her. I thought she is your first love.”
“Well yes, she is my first love.” Kamiki scratches his head, “But I realized that day that she isn’t my true love.”
Fukuda stares at him in disbelief, “You’ve got to be kidding.”
“No, I’m serious.” Kamiki protested, only to be eaten by his own coat that Fukuda just threw.
“I’m leaving!” Fukuda angrily wheeled her wheelchair around.
Kamiki quickly catches her wheelchair, “Wait, what’s wrong with me telling you that I like you? You’re not making sense.”
“You’re the one that doesn’t make any sense.” Fukuda spats back.
“Then tell me which part of ‘I like you’ don’t you understand!”
“Everything! Why me? Even though I... I...” Fukuda’s voice broke up. Seeing this, Kamiki pulls her close to him.
“Because you’re Fukuda Mayuko.” He said, “You’re the only girl that I truly love. Do I need a reason for it?”
Instead of replying, Fukuda tries to pull away. She doesn’t know since when, but Kamiki’s arms are now much stronger. They wrap around her tightly, prevent her from escape. Even though she tries her best to struggle, it was no used. She finally gives up and her tired arms awkwardly hang by her sides. Kamiki slowly releases her and gazes into her eyes.
“Do you like me?” Though his eyes are hopeful, his face blushed as he said these words.
Fukuda stares back at him with red eyes, hating herself for showing her weak side to him once again.
“No, I hate you! I hate you Kamiki Ryunosuke.” Tears flows from her eyes in tiny droplets. Kamiki pulls her back to his arms.
“I hate you so much!” She repeated again and again as tears fall on his shoulder, “The most in this world. No, the most in this universe.”
Kamiki smiles, “That’s fine, because my love will cancel all your hate.”
