DAMN IT, screen... I really do want the backspace key to be destructive. I do not want this key to delete to the right. And now I'm being forced to hit the DELETE key once more because of what I consider to be a stupid default.

The following in ~/.screenrc seems to cure it. It removes termcap overrides for backspace and DEL that screen seems to insist on changing:

# termcap kb=backspace; termcap kD=DEL
bindkey -k kb
bindkey -d -k kb
bindkey -k kD
bindkey -d -k kD

Now STAY LIKE THAT.
