For the last f*&^!$!#$ing time...

DAMN IT, screen... I really do want the backspace key to be destructive. I do not want this key to delete to the right. And now I'm being forced to hit the DELETE key once more because of what I consider to be a stupid default.

The following in ~/.screenrc seems to cure it. It removes termcap overrides for backspace and DEL that screen seems to ( Read more... )

The first time you use screen, then try to backspace, but it beeps at you or deletes chars to the right, you'll be able to refer back here. :o)

^H

Yes, the almighty ^H. It's called BACK SPACE. That is, it makes you do a space.. TO THE BACK.

I know it doesn't sound like a complicated concept. But if I ever log into a box again, start using vi and hit backspace and get

^?^?^?

instead of it actually backspacing, I"m going to throw things.

Oh wait, I shouldn't make that promise because I'll be throwing things tomorrow.

Sigh *mutter* stty erase '^?' *keeps working*

Similarly, with defective screen defaults, I go to vi, find that I mess up, and then get *beep* *beep* when I hit the backspace key.

So I'm like, "Oh goody... what key does screen think I need to press to do what I want?" and then proceed to hit ^H, DEL, Ctrl-backspace ...

At least with the screenrc settings above, I stand a chance of having stty be what everyone looks to for the key settings. :o)
