So as of the past 6 months or so my comic book reading has become incredibly selective. It could be that I'm tiring of the medium, I don't have much money to spend on them, or I'm not seeking out more work. I think it's a combination of my lack of searching for new work and less money to drop. I mean the only ongoing comics I'm currently reading are Ex Machina, The Walking Dead, Powers, and Y: The Last Man. Now I'm serious here, these are VERY GOOD. Please go and seek out the first collected volume of any of these works and you will really like them. I think it's also interesting that only one of these books is even a super hero comic, and that is Powers. Even that though, the super heroes are kind of a terciary (sp?) aspect of the work as it revolves around detectives.
Anyways, I'm probably boring you all with books you haven't heard of let alone read but I also wanna state that comics aren't just for 10 year old kids. I think of late this myth has been kind of dissolved but it still bears repeating. There are a few comics out there that use the medium of images and words in a way that is wholly unique in it's own medium.
Jon's reccomendations for 1st time comic readers:
Marvel: 1602 (A great read by Neil Gaiman (writer of Sandman) about Marvel charaters in 15th century England, better than it sounds, good start cuz of familiar characters)
Berlin: City of Stones (Wow, this book by Jason Lutes takes place in Berlin between WW1 and WW2. An amazing period piece)
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (Written by Frank Miller who did the Sin City series..shows an aging Batman coming out of retirement)
Watchmen (Do not make this the first comic you read. Watchmen by Allan Moore (writer of V for Vendetta and lots more) uses the comic medium better than any other book on here. This is a DENSE read but is totally worth it if you have a preexisting understanding for comics)
all these comics listed above are stand alone stories and you don't gotta feel like you gotta go out and buy the whole series (unlike Powers, Ex Machina, Y, and Walking Dead which are four amazing comic series but they're so good that you'll end up like me having to own all of them.)
So yeah....if you want a good read you can thank me later.
