Haven't been doing much in the past few days. Today at least some of my flatmates are supposed to arrive, but as of now, the apartment is still cold and empty.
Yesterday was a pretty productive day. I went to Lloyds TSB to open a bank account and finally got one open. Then I took my laptop to the laptop clinic at the Old Library on campus in the afternoon to see if the professionals there could help me configure the proxy settings - the last step to getting internet in my room. One of the chaps did it, but MSN Messenger Paris-Hilton-ly refuses to work. So no chatting for now.
Then later I went to the Christian Union's Welfare Tent again - not to have free tea and coffee this time, but just to be around people because it gets so lonely in the flat. I was talking to a girl called Clare and a guy called Tim there. They were really nice. We were talking about Christianity, Islam, God and religion in general. I'll probably go to their meeting on Friday to which Clare and Tim invited me. And I might just go for the Christian Union's Freshers activities which are pretty nominally priced when compared to the activities organized by the Freshers Week '07 organizers for which you need a wristband that costs a whopping £49 [$98]. I'm on a budget, you know.
Later, I went out with a friend, Adeeb and some other people to a pub near Northumberland Street. It was too noisy there, they were playing some death metal music or something. Adeeb [who's an Indian from Saudi Arabia, by the way] had a glass of beer in his hand and kept asking me to try some. Thankfully, at that very instant Ammi rang me and I left the pub to talk to her.
I've learnt some things in the past few days.
A 'quid' is the British equivalent of 'buck'. 'Ten quid' means £10.
A 'bairn' is the Geordie word for a 'child'. Shy bairns get nowt! Shy children get nothing - so don't be afraid to ask.
Everybody here seems to know about Dubai.
The French sometimes don't know what date Bastille Day falls on.
Even though Newcastle's a much safer place than London is, your laptop can still get stolen.
Rice with low-fat butter tastes horrid. Daal is necessary.
I've completely lost touch with the world outside Newcastle.
