A further search on the phrase "Dante's Inferno" and that image turns up an essay referencing the original Famous Monsters column--which, being written by Joe Dante of later Gremlins fame, was entitled "Dante's Inferno"--somewhat confounding the issue, although the still does seem to have a similar flavor to the images I've brought up from the movie:

I have seen it, but not for a very, very, very long time. I actually saw it at the Smithsonian when I was a teenager. They had an all day film festival of cinema before 1940. I don't really remember it in any detail at all, but when I saw the image it was familiar and when I did the image search it brought it back. Pretty sure that's the film.
