Looking for a term

Okay so like... when you cut a bush down, but don't uproot it, and there's still these spiky twig things sticking up out of the ground, what are those called? They're not the roots or branches, and I don't think "trunk(s?)" is the right word (at least, I've never heard anyone say "the trunk of a bush").

edit: I think "cane" is the word I'm looking for! Never heard it in reference to plants before. (edit again: wait no, "sugarcane". but that's it i think.)
