I keep remembering this kid's book i read in the 90s, but was likely from the 80s or older.
Anyway, the story is about a young boy who hears from other kids at school that the movie "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" is going to play on TV and that they will be allowed to stay up late to watch it.
The boy decides that he wants to stay up late to see it too, so later on at home he strikes up a deal with his mother that he'll take a nap in the afternoon in exchange for staying up late to see the movie.
He ends up missing the movie because he falls back asleep before it can start.
I'm about 99% sure Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was the mentioned movie (mostly because it's odd sounding and tends to stick out in your mind)..and I also believe it was a chapter book, which makes me wonder if the story was only from one chapter.
The young boy also has a little sister, and if I'm not mistaken she either had chapters written from her perspective or actual books about her.
edit, FOUND: "Rip-Roaring Russell" by Johanna Hurwitz.
