Scene from a book: India and a horse.

I just remembered a scene from a book I read (almost positive it's a book), but can't figure out which one it is:

A guy is in India (visiting or on vacation), and he is wandering on a beach and he sees a starving horse wander into the water and start drinking. He saves the horse and I think pays someone to take care of it or leaves it with someone.

Any thoughts?
