I've decided that when I'm a proper grown-up and can have my own pets, I should have a naming scheme for them. So far the only non-fandom related scheme I can think of would be people with plants and animals named after them (or other major contributions to taxonomy)- Douglas, Linneaus, Lewis and Clark both, Steller.
