I've decided that when I'm a proper grown-up and can have my own pets, I should have a naming scheme for them. So far the only non-fandom related scheme I can think of would be people with plants and animals named after them (or other major contributions to taxonomy)- Douglas, Linneaus, Lewis and Clark both, Steller. I feel like I'm leaving out ( Read more... )

My naming schemes are all fandom related right now too, except the stars and constellations thing, which is really to cover up the fandom-related-ness.

I like the scientist idea, though. That's cute.

Sirius and Regulus, right? It might be to cover up fandom stuff, but it's still a cool idea. I'd name a particularly prissy and entitlement-whorey cat Rigel in a heartbeat- or a frog, should I ever own one as a pet (Farscape) and a big black dog does cry out to be named Sirius.

Well, my idea was to get a big black dog, name it Sirius, then get a snow dog of some kind (Husky, etc) and name it Polaris. Then, perhaps get a small yappy dog and name it Ursa (Minor).

I like that! Little Bear is a super cute name for a dog in any language.

When I was young, all my fish were named after Bonanza characters. My son's fish are named after Buffy characters (Spike took over the tank). Our cats came in pairs: the first were 'S' names, Solomon and Sheba, and the next set were Trophy and Topaz. Logically, we'd be ready for 'U' next, but I don't think there are very many wonderful names starting with 'U.'

There's a few good U names. Besides "unknown," "Unique," and "Urban," which I don't particularly like as names, here are the ones I could think of or found on the NameVoyager*: Ulysses, Ula, Uma, Una, Ursula, and Uriel. Uriel is the archangel no one has ever heard of when I tell them which archangel goes with what "quarter"- Michael is fire/south, Gabriel is water/west, Raphael is air/east, and poor forgotten Uriel is earth/north.

There's a more of each gender in the Namipedia, and the ones that didn't appear in NameVoyager were never in the USA top 1000 names: stuff like Ulrika, Umberto, and Upton.

*NameVoyager lists Unknown because it uses old government records for names.

I like Uriah and Uriel. It would be amusing to have a cat named "Unknown." It would be as if he was in the kitty witness protection program...
