Can't sleep, clowns will eat me

The Insomnia Fairy has blessed me again.

Couldn't sleep so I watched Ichi the Killer again to make myself feel better. I adore that movie. YES YES YES it is about as sick and demented as they come. But it's also brilliant. I LOVE Takashi Miike. And I RILLY RILLY love Tadanobu Asano. I mean, in an unhealthy way. OMIGOD I forgot how gorgeous that boy ( Read more... )

We watched Bedlam last night. I just hate spending 150 minutes of my life watch movies where everyone in them is miserable. Yuck.

Which Bedlam? The only one I know of is the 1946 Boris Karloff flick!

Gah, not Bedlam -- BABEL. The one that won all the Academy Awards or whatever. Miserable. I must've been tired.

Oh man--just reading the description of that gave me a headache. If you want to watch a GOOD long movie, rent There Will Be Blood. It's awesome. And not EVERYBODY ends up miserable.

I dunno, I spent most of the IJ movie worried that I was going to see a chest burster come out of John Hurt...again.

Dave was thinking the same thing.

We are truly sick puppies.

OMG I hadn't thought of that! John Hurt + aliens = GORK! Poor Daniel. He hasn't seen the movie yet, but he's gonna be so horrified. He HATES Roswell. He HATES ancient astronauts. I just kind of gritted my teeth through those bits. It was worth it to see Indy back in the saddle again.

Well, there was a fair bit of discussion about that at BASFA. I really didn't like the "Sciffy" element myself. I liked the serial adventure aspect, the homage to the Tom Mix cliffhangers that my dad would sneak into the movie theatres for when he was a youngster.

The one explanation that made a fair amount of sense was that it had taken place 20 years later (even though in reality it should have been more like 30) in the "Atomic" age. Therefore what was popular? Yup, flying saucers. UFO spottings, project bluebook. A little of the old Erich von Daniken. Actually it reminded me of Toy Story 2 when he was running through the "burbs" with the Howdy Doody reference.

We still enjoyed it a great deal, and rated it much higher than "dumb screaming blond action". Oh well, that's what you get for putting your spouse in a movie you direct...

But...I digress.

I would have expected you to pick up on the Alien thingie though...dang girl, you are slowing down!

I did appreciate all the Atomic Age references. I even liked the fact that the alien ship at the end was a saucer. But overall, I would have preferred it to be something mystical or supernatural.

I am actually not a Temple of Doom hater. (I know, I'm one of the few.) Sure, Kate Capshaw was irritating. But Molaram more than made up for it. I'm all in favor of hauling out hearts.

And you're right. I'm definitely slowing down. And since I'm slowing down, I may as well kill brain cells as fast as possible. I think rum will do it.

Hi, it's Lori White here--Spring told me to pop in, so blame it on her.

I had to respond to this one, as I am married to an Ichi the Killer fan. Also a Miike fan. Were you and Gary separated at birth? Anyway, if you ever want to come visit we will have appropriate viewing material on tap.

AWESOME to hear from you! I'm gonna add you to my Friends list, if'n you don't mind.

HA that's funny about Gary. My Daniel is just the opposite. He'll leave the room if I'm watching Miike. Not that I blame him!

How are you? How's thangs?

I friended you first, so there.

Miike has done so much wacky stuff that there's even things I like. Have you seen Zebra Man? If you have, do you still want to friend me? Because I really like that one.

I'd probably be able to make it through once, but I'm guessing maybe not more than that, since I'm really glad I saw Old Boy but I don't know if I can watch it again. Then there's The Audition. I do get semi-detailed but quite enthusiastic descriptions and reviews of all these.

I'm doing okay. I'm back in school, trying to build up some science cred so I can do science writing gigs instead of documenting financial software, which is a snooze. Gary's trying to handle the bills, but hates his job. So life lurches along. Spring says you guys are having some problems on the job front. I'm really sorry. That sucks.

YES Zebra Man was so cute! And I really liked Happienss of the Katikuris, have you seen that one? It's a black comedy, but not really violent, just silly. It's a musical. And sometimes everybody turns into claymation people, for no good reason ( ... )
