Telšiai - capital of Samogitia, part 4

Feb 08, 2010 17:49

It's time to finish my reports about Telšiai. Today last photos and comments. And since this is last report it contains unordered information :

Being back in the center of Telšiai I made short walk along backstreets.

Residential house from 1912 - rather big for such town:

Photos were made early September. So in the mid-winter such views warms me :)))

Veterinary chemistry with improvised market around :))

Texture on an older building in the Telšiai center (this building former Jewish seminary):

Then I went away from the center to the areas that 50 years ago were the outskirts of this town. Here you can find also several objects that distinguishes this town. One of then is Samogitian art museum "Alka" (built in 1939-1940, arch. S. Stulginskis). Museum is unexpectedly rich: it contains the so called collection   of duc de Coiseul - the last minister of foreign affairs of royal France. After great French revolution (in 1792) he was forced to leave the country. In the early XIXth century he was given the estate near Telšiai - Plateliai estate - from Russian tsar Pavel. He brought rich collection of his family treasures and in the XXth century together with the other artifacts Choiseul collection was moved to the Telšiai museum:

Small historic canon near museum:

This part of the museum building seems to be relatively new (1980s or 1990s):

Bust to the founder of the museum - Pranas Genys:

This is the building of the Telšiai faculty of the applied arts of the Vilnius art academy. Telšiai should be particularly grateful to this school - it makes otherwise potentially sleepy district center into lively town:

Main administration offices in Telšiai are also slightly away from the center. Muncipality and the office of the Telšiai county head is composed from two buildings: one of them is from 1970s another probably late 1990s or early 2000s:

In front of the administration modern Independence monument - for me it looked rather interesting:

Composition with dates:

Another simple older building near the outskirts:

In the backstreets there are many forgotten buildings that needs better care and they also could form better atmosphere in the town:

Modernism of 1970s :))

Former magistrat court building - today post office:

The future of the  town :)))

And finally the last point of attention that I want to present. At the southern suburb of Rainiai is the place which is the Lithuanian version of Katyn. Here on the June 24, 1941 NKVD officials brutally murdered more than 100 town residents. Murders were carried out with exceptional brutality and as in the Katyn case after WWII authorities added the massacre to the Nazis. Only in 1988-1989 truth has been officially recognized and the chapel at the place of murder has been built using original design of 1943 (arch. Jonas Virakas). (This story had another very sad side: the case was used successfully by the Nazi propaganda - since several NKVD officers were of Jewish origin Nazis used the fact for the black antisemitic propaganda):

Part of the names:

And here I can finish the reports :)
