Telšiai - capital of Samogitia, part 3

Today third report about Telšiai:

Last time I finished my report near Orthodox church and slightly violated consistency of the report: I skipped Cathedral square with adjacent area. So let's come back to the crossing of the Respublikos street and Cathedral square.

Near crossroad you can see one of the newest monuments in Telšiai which immediately became one of the most popular in this town: Samogitian bear with Samogitian children (2008):

In the neighborhood you can also find Žemaitės drama theater. This semi-professional theater is very important ingredient making this district center better place to live. Theater consists from two buildings. Old one was built in 1938-1940 (arch. Steponas Stulginskis):

And new building (2001-2004):

New building is near Cathedral square. In the center of the square you can find modern fountain:

Several restaurated older simple buildings. This building is from 1820s:

But of course the main point at the square is the Cathedral, former Bernardine monastery and seminary. Bernardine monastery was built in Telšiai in 1624 and the church in 1650. In 1762-1765 the church was rebuilt completely.
Today this church is the Cathedral and the center of Telšiai diocese. But this town became the center of diocese only in 1926 despite that diocese is treated as the successor of old Samogitian diocese established in 1413. The center of that diocese was the township Varniai 20 km to the south from Telšiai till 1864 when imperial Russia's authorities forced to move the center of the diocese to Kaunas. Historical circumstances caused that for centuries Lithuania don't had own church province and both Samogitia and Vilnius dioceses were parts of the Polish church province with the center in Gnezno.  In 1920s such situation became intolerable and in 1926 Vatican formed independent Lithuanian church province with the center in Kaunas and several new dioceses. One of them was Telšiai diocese and was treated as the successor of old Samogitia diocese. (Only in 1988 Polish Pope John Paul II moved also Vilnius diocese to the Lithuanian church province).

Gates to the Cathedral and former monastery (built in the first part of XIXth century, arch. F. Rimgaila):

Cathedral:

Inside the area:

The oldest part of the complex - Bernardine cloister (1624):

The complex is under slow speed restauration. New gates to the Cathedral:

Next to the main gates two memorial tables with the names of all Samogitian/Telšiai bishops with years of tenure from 1413 were placed:

Many bishops in the past were descendants of famous families, some were famous educators:

Deeper in the yard you can find seminary building from 1926-1928. The building is difficult to photograph but in my opinion it is rather ordinary:

Near the Cathedral are also buried first three bishops of Telšiai. All of them became martyrs: Justinas Staugaitis (death 1943), Vincentas Borisevičius (death 1946), Pranciškus Ramanauskas (death 1959):

At the other corner of the square you can find bishop's residence (built 1929-1932, arch. V. Dubenetski). Residence requires maintenance but it seems that bishop wished that first of all the restauration of the Cathedral be finished:

In thje neighborhood you also can find several buildings from late 1980s and early 1990s:

Then I went back to the Market square using backstreets. Most of the administrative buildings from soviet period in Telšiai are renovated:

Court building older and in not so good shape:))

One more example of modernity:
