Who: Arietta, Cain What: Post-nap time When: After Cain visits Arietta and they both fell asleep in the hallway, outside of Arietta's door. (ie. this) Where: Hotel Rating: Unrestricted
For once, Cain awoke because he felt rested rather than terrified. His eyes blinked rapidly for a moment or two, trying to remember where he was, how he'd gotten there and who the girl curled up against him was.
'Arietta,' his mind supplied when it had woken up a bit more. 'You came to comfort her because she was... is crying.'
Poor girl. She must not have cried much at all in her life, given the amount she clearly needed to get out now. Funny pair they made, really: the boy who'd learned never to cry again and the girl who needed to learn to begin crying altogether.
Standing up was something of a challenge, but Cain needed to get her to bed. She wasn't actually as small as Merry, whatever his initial estimation. Tsking at himself, the young lord nevertheless managed to get up onto his feet carefully, shouldering as much of her weight as she could to prevent her from waking. Sincerely hoping that the girl was a deep sleeper, he reached out to try the door.
Locked. Lovely.

Arietta felt the motion of being picked up, but didn't react to it no more than just shifting herself to be closer to the warmness of Cain. She body naturally reacted that way and there wasn't much she could consciously do about it.
Dreaming.
It was never pleasant when it was full of nightmares. It was also part of the reason why Arietta was afraid to sleep alone.
Without noticing the connection, when Cain got up, Arietta's dream took a downhill trip. That happiness she dreamed up was taken away from him because the warmth was removed. That's why Arietta's body desperately reached out for Cain again, so she could return to that happiness. But with his struggle of getting her to a bed, she couldn't exactly get to close to him, thus, the nightmare continued.
'Oh, I pity that poor child. Her parents were killed in the horrible tsunami. And she's so young too

It was strange, but he could almost feel her clinging to him, snuggling deeper against him as they moved. In annoyance he bit down on his lip and paused, hand leaving the doorknob to smooth Arietta's hair gently as he murmured soft soothing sounds against the side of her head.
But it was an awkward position. After a moment or two, he reached out once again to jingle the door, fumbling with it for an external catch. Lord only knew how he managed to finally jack it open (he suspected it must not have ever been properly closed to begin with, really). Carefully, making gentle noises again as he shifted the girl's weight, Cain moved them into the room, making a line for the bed to lay her down carefully.

In her dream, Arietta ran. There was also a part of her that never wanted to face the truth. Almost always she ran away from the situation.
Since given her current position, she wasn't as close to Cain's warmth as she wanted to be. Unconsciously, the tears flowed faster and harder from her eyes. She was an only child, she had all the attention, affection, and comfort she wanted. But now, the reality was she was stripped from it. And now, in a dream, she was reminded.
Arietta's body felt the hand from Cain that comforted her fall upon her head.
Don't worry. Don't listen to those people. They don't know how truly special you are. You are still loved dear child.Cain never walked into Arietta's life until now, but those sounded like they belonged to him

He couldn't help letting a little yawn escape. It was an accident, of course. Then again, it was an accident that he was lying here cuddling rather than out looking for Riff or finding a coat for Merry or making arrangements for Emmeline or at least sitting in a chair by the side of the bed as if he had some sense of propriety.
A happy accident. Like water colours.
Cain was even getting used to the 'hmm' and 'mmn' replies, accepting them as speech and beginning to interpret their meanings somewhat. Usually simple agreement, it seemed, althought this one was almost hesitantly pensive.

The question came completely unexpected, shaking him out of his sleepy trance and back into the conversation.
"Mm?" he blinked, tilting his head slightly to look down at her from the corner of his eye. "No, not at all, dear. Why?"
A quick review of the last few seconds left nothing to be responded to, as far as Cain could tell. Perhaps he was getting too comfortable and missing something obvious because of it.
[[ooc: At least she's fairly consistent. Cain bounces between acting 20 and acting 8, depending on who's around. >->]]
She would leave it that, hoping not to make things awkward.
Arietta sighed. This warmth, this comfort, this affection... couldn't Cain stay by her side forever? No one... no one would be able to give her the things she missed out on that she silently craved for now.
Suddenly, tears escaped her eyes. Arietta hoped he didn't notice.
[[consistent? she's like that in front of him... I just make her sound more mature... somehow... haha When she's with Anise, it's like 5. YOU KILLED MOMMY! I HATE YOU! I AM GOING TO KILL YOU! But around guys (especially those who are nice to her) she acts mature]]
"...do you doubt that?" he asked, glancing down at her briefly before shaking his head. "I shall be decidedly happy. I should have thought that much was clear..."
A quiet smile played over his lips as he rested his head against hers, soaking in her warmth and affection much as a kitten does when curled up upon its master's lap.

For once, things were comfortable. It was like those rare days he was allowed to lounge in the sun, his sister curled against his side as they dozed lazily, storybook lying forgotten beside them, not to be disturbed until Riff brought them their afternoon tea. Sitting here this way, comfortably hugged by and hugging Arietta, feeling the new radiation of peace and calm coming from her, he was starting to get a similar feeling.
Things could work this time. This friendship could last, could mutually support, could keep them both sane while life continued to pound them.
Merry would like Arietta, more than Emmeline, most likely. Then again, Emmeline rarely liked anyone. And Merry would understand if Cain slipped off to see this girl, to hold her quietly while she cried or to sit with her this way in silence. All signs pointed toward things working out very well for them.
"...and... do you want to come with me?"

"You did... but I wanted to hear it."
There, for once, fate played the cards in her favor. She was happy, Cain was happy. They were both able to share in the things they needed in life.
Arietta smiled. She wasn't sure if Cain could see it since she looked over his shoulder, but she was sure he could feel it and her happiness.
