Who: Arietta, Cain What: Post-nap time When: After Cain visits Arietta and they both fell asleep in the hallway, outside of Arietta's door. (ie. this) Where: Hotel Rating: Unrestricted
He couldn't help letting a little yawn escape. It was an accident, of course. Then again, it was an accident that he was lying here cuddling rather than out looking for Riff or finding a coat for Merry or making arrangements for Emmeline or at least sitting in a chair by the side of the bed as if he had some sense of propriety.
A happy accident. Like water colours.
Cain was even getting used to the 'hmm' and 'mmn' replies, accepting them as speech and beginning to interpret their meanings somewhat. Usually simple agreement, it seemed, althought this one was almost hesitantly pensive.
[[ooc: I can tell. You seem to be concentrating greatly. He'll have just turned 17.]]
The question came completely unexpected, shaking him out of his sleepy trance and back into the conversation.
"Mm?" he blinked, tilting his head slightly to look down at her from the corner of his eye. "No, not at all, dear. Why?"
A quick review of the last few seconds left nothing to be responded to, as far as Cain could tell. Perhaps he was getting too comfortable and missing something obvious because of it.
[[ooc: At least she's fairly consistent. Cain bounces between acting 20 and acting 8, depending on who's around. >->]]
She would leave it that, hoping not to make things awkward.
Arietta sighed. This warmth, this comfort, this affection... couldn't Cain stay by her side forever? No one... no one would be able to give her the things she missed out on that she silently craved for now.
Suddenly, tears escaped her eyes. Arietta hoped he didn't notice.
[[consistent? she's like that in front of him... I just make her sound more mature... somehow... haha When she's with Anise, it's like 5. YOU KILLED MOMMY! I HATE YOU! I AM GOING TO KILL YOU! But around guys (especially those who are nice to her) she acts mature]]
Sadly (or happily, depending on how one took it), Cain was a gentleman. The tears were noticed instantly.
"Arietta..." Again he brushed fingers through her hair, this time shifting his weight so he could lean down and press a soft kiss to her forehead. The poor dear creature... He'd never be able to leave her, at this rate. How could one leave a person in such a state?
She didn't answer when he called her name. Oddly enough, she cried a bit harder.
Arietta wanted to scream 'Don't leave me' but something like that wasn't possible. Cain would have to leave eventually. And all the people she said it to, sooner or later, left her. So not saying those words maybe would ease the pain.
She always knew what she wanted. But why was it now that that line was so blurred?
[[aww~ oh, yeah, I'm totally done studying for now... I can't take anymore!!!]]
"Please, I'm here..." he whispered softly against her forehead, eyes dropping closed as he drew her in closer (which must at some point become impossible; could they physically be closer than they already were?). "I'm sure I cannot fix all that troubles you, but please... Please, I can help with some of it, can't I?"
This wasn't his forte. Flirting with women, sure. Giving them a false sense of security, of course. But caring for one this way...? He hadn't yet figured out how to handle his own sister's emotions properly, let alone those of a young woman he'd just met. Riff knew how to comfort people. Cain could only think to hold her tightly.
She already had two guys who were willing to stay by her side. It would be wrong for her to add Cain to the equation.
But then again, where were they?
Cain had gone out of his way to be nice to her. He had showed up, comforted her, let her cry, gave her security, gave her everything she needed at the moment and time. If he left... what would she do?
Why did she feel so broken all of a sudden? Arietta wouldn't deny she still had feelings for Riku and Sora, but Cain... a person she had just met...
"I- "
Arietta couldn't the rest of her words out; they stayed choked in her throat.
He wasn't entirely sure what else to do. There wasn't some parent he could emulate, some soothing nurse from his childhood to recreate. Riff had come to help him from far different monsters than Arietta's. So he tried the next best thing: repetition.
"...come here."
As he spoke, he began to disentangle himself from the tight hug, aiming to sit up and bring the girl with him. It had been easier to hold her properly in his lap, the way they'd ended up in the hall. He could lean on the wall at the head of the bed and hold her quite comfortably, really.
"That's better," he sighed quietly, almost happily as he pulled his arms comfortably around her again. It was odd; he could feel her strength easily as he held her, but at the same time she was so frail and defenseless, so much in need of a stable support (like a human body) to hold her up.
Funny, how similar all people were.
Brushing her hair back from her face, Cain leaned in around her, pressing a soft kiss against her cheek. "Can you not smile for me?"
For himself, Cain smiled very softly, with a sad quiet look in his eyes. It was too much, it seemed. Such a painful thing, that this poor girl should find a smile overwhelming. She ought to be like the other little girls, grinning and cheerful. All young women should be.
Arietta knew someone her ask should be able to do this simple request. But, her past hardships stopped here from being able to do such a thing.
Now, he sounded like him... apologizing when he didn't need to. She whispered a "Don't apologize; it's not your fault," and placed her head under his chin.
"I'm sorry," Arietta apologized in return, "It's.... something I don't do often.... I can't...."
With a soft tsk he shook his head, giving her shoulder a squeeze as she settled in against him properly, chin hooked posessively over her head. He could understand that sort of situation. Some people didn't cry. Some didn't smile. Some were afraid of their own children.
People were just different.
It was saddening, this tired girl who didn't smile. Perhaps she could learn to, some day. It wouldn't really matter, he supposed, letting his fingers begin to trace an idle patter on her back. So long as she could find comfort in another human being. One didn't need to smile to feel glad.

"Did I say something...?"
[[yes, water, carbon, oxygen, and carbon cycles!!!! oh okay. Arietta is 16 even though she sure as hell doesn't act like it.]]

Wasn't there some way she could get her point across without actually saying, 'I want you to stay with me'?

But the kiss on her cheek took her by surprise, so she jumped a little.
With the tears in her eyes, she stared up at him.
Smiling was something she couldn't do on command.

It was only under certain conditions that she was able to smile. But now, her mind and body wasn't allowing her to do so.
"I'm sorry... I jus-"
Arietta kept repeating she was sorry and she didn't know why. The words flowed from her mouth constantly.
"I'm sor-"
