Mint Festival 2009

Aug 18, 2009 21:07

I had a pretty nice weekend. I didn't do much on Friday. My Cooley peeps were busy preparing for final exams and I didn't feel like going to the movies or anything like that. Instead, I drove out to the lake to take a few pictures of my car. I ended up going to bed early.

On Saturday, I got up very early and went over to my friend Josh's house on the other side of town. (Josh is my gaming group's game master.) His parents live up in St. Johns. Every year, he takes his family (wife and 3 daughters) up there to enjoy the Mint Festival. St. Johns has 5 mint farms that provide a large portion of the nation's mint supply. This festival consists of a parade and a bunch of vendors and food booths at the central park. His parents' house is right on the parade route, so they invite people over to sit on their lawn and watch the parade. They make a party of it, which has become a tradition in their family. This year, I was invited. I took my camera and a lawn chair. I had come to shoot photos of this parade a few years ago, but I never did anything with the photos. I left when it was over, never realizing that there was a lot more to the festival. This time, I spent all day hanging out with Josh and his family.

Here's a few highlights from the parade:

All the photos form this day can be seen in this LJ gallery.

After the parade, we walked to the park to check out the vendor booths and let the kids play in the park. I took many snapshots of them on the swings and slides. It was a pretty hot day. I got all sweaty and tired from walking around so much. Afterward, we hung out for a while at Josh's parents' house playing cards. It was a fun and busy day.
