You do it to yourself.....

I went into HMV during lunch today to enter to the horrible sounds of Mark Ronson's re-imagining of 'Just'. It was painful but headed straight down to the vinyl section to see what was out. The man next to me was picking up everything, I had to look to see what he was doing. It was Mark Ronson ( Read more... )

"Is it possible that Mark could be a good person that just happens to make completely shit music?"

Are you Carrie Bradshaw?

i dislike mark's album but 'back to black' is undoubtedly my favourite album of recent years, so THERE.

Well Mr Anonymous,

I have never heard 'Back to Black' but I can quite easily believe Amy's talent and personality could quite easily transcend into a good record no matter who was producing it. He is probably much to blame for the only thing I dislike about her and that is her retro sound.
Amy on the Brits, although quite obviously very nervous exuded much more personality and talent than any of the others that took to the stage that night. Lots of performers, Adele, Rihanna etc proved they could sing -well woopie doo- but were void of charisma, personality and anything distinctive that hard work and genuine talent provide. I found that whole show depressing. It was like watching Pop Idol, but that is the way to make money these days isn't it?
Ooh I went off tangent, very Carrie Bradshaw -well I hope as I don't actually watch that show.

well yes the songs are great whatever the production. but a retro sound isn't always a bad thing. the bravery, for example, have a retro 80s sound.

Adele and Rihanna can't hold a stage, true. But they're both 19/20, so give them time. I know there are some very young stars who have naturally been able to do it, but plenty more who need to grow into it.

I think I miss genuine characters of talent and distinctive personality in pop. By giving people with good faces and adequate voices the chance to bypass finding themselves their own sound and experience we are producing forgettable faces with no longetivity to milk the cash cow of whatever the last fad was, i.e. this abomination of 'retro Amy straight out of Brit School' rubbish.
Record companies would rather champaign this mediocrity as it's a quick sell than nuture an artist. The future will be pretty bleak if it continues like this for Britain. It has become Pop Idol.
It was dreadful on the Brits last night to realise that the International (American) was a far more respectable selection over what we produce.
I personally don't think someone should be given a stage if they aren't capable of it.

Well there are plenty of characters of talent and personality around. But ya know, why should an artist appear fully formed with their first album? Rihanna has came on leaps and bounds over her three albums. Adele is 19 and will have been finding a sound at the school, and I've no doubt that will continue to develop. Adele is so promoted because she is in the Amy mould, she's not in the Amy mould because a record company made her that way. It's what she already was. She's been gigging for ages and those shows are her and her guitar. The spectacle of the Brits is something she obviously isn't used to. I don't see why it's so bad for her to get used to it ( ... )

I largely agree. Pop stars don't have any edge or rebellion to them anymore. Compare the pop stars of the Eighties to today, there is no personality or originality. It's all about conforming and playing the game to sell records. We need some Boy George's and Cyndi Lauper's ( ... )
