It occurs to me that I'm playing three distinct roles in Invocatio, and it might be useful for me to clarify exactly what those are and what I need to do to be successful at them.
1 - Composer. I'm writing a good chunk of the music we perform. This pretty much takes place on my own time, sitting in front of a computer, keyboard and/or piano. To do that successfully, I need to be sure to allow enough time for the process to take place, and I need to learn more/get better at theory, orchestration, and a bunch of things I'm sure I don't even know the names of yet.
2 - Musician. I'm playing the music we perform, obviously, or at least my section of it. The obvious time there is the performance, but rehearsing takes place both on my time and with the rest of the group, at home or at the studio. To do that well, I need to keep my technique in shape (and hopefully improve). Practice and lessons, no great mystery there. This is probably where I'm strongest.
3 - Producer. There's a specific sound/experience I'm trying to create with all of this, not just the music but the mood and the costumes and everything that goes into what people perceive. I have a whole lot to learn about that process, about mixing and marketing and the steps that lead from concept to concert. This is probably where I'm weakest.
