I decided some time ago that I really don't need two laptops. I have a nice MacBook Pro from about three years ago (AppleCare actually expires the day after tomorrow!) as well as the unique aluminum uni-body MacBook. I really love the MacBook because of its size. Ever since I gave my 12" Powerbook to my sister, Chris, I have missed having access to a very small, portable computer. The 13" MacBook is a close substitute.

But my poor MBP has been relegated to the roll of a desktop computer. It looks like it is on life support with all the USB, firewire, display adaptor and audio output jacks full of external devices hanging off it. I really need a real desktop and the newly announced iMacs are exactly what I have been waiting for.

Fortunately, my friend, John C, has decided to abandon the painful existence of a PC user and come into the light! He is buying my MBP and I am certain he will be happy with it. I have it all configured for him with the latest software updates and the programs he told me he wants to use such as aMSN, Skype, etc. I even set up his mail account for him. All is working and ready for delivery. I am just waiting for him to call and give me the word to drop it off.

Then I will be in a position of having to decide WHICH of the new iMacs I want. As of today only the core 2 duo models are available -- and then, only in the Apple Stores in Toronto. They should show up locally by the end of this week, if not tomorrow (at least so I am told).

On the other hand, the more expensive, more powerful and hence longer-lived i5 and i7 quad core models are due next week. I am not convinced I NEED the extra cores, but I do know that the newer architecture will guarantee me a bit more longevity in the long run. I am tempted to cough up the extra cash to get one, assuming I can exercise enough self control not to run into town and get the model that is available now.

The other issue is, do I need the 27" display? Will it even fit in my office? I suspect it will, but I do remember a little over 10 years ago returning an 18" display exchanging it for a smaller one because I was just overwhelmed by the size, brightness and immense real estate it gave me. Now I am sitting here with a 24" display and more than happy with it! How times change.

Well, stay tuned. I will figure it out. And soon!
