Our garbage just got picked up! *does the happy dance* I am way more excited about this than is healthy, I think. Three weeks of it piling up will do that to you. (:
In other news, I finally got the last of our network problems resolved late last night. For those unaware, Verizon had an..."incident", we'll call it, in our area on the morning of New Year's Eve at around 10:32am. I say 10:32, because that's when the spam stopped streaming in to my server. We noticed it around 12:30-1ish, and then I did about an hour of checking and re-checking before calling my
ISP. They couldn't ping my DSL router, so they went off and submitted a ticket to Verizon. An hour later, they called back; apparently, they'd had to wait on the phone (on their special "reseller" support line) for over half an hour before talking to someone. Seems Verizon had a box and some line fuse in a particularly nasty way out on the main street near us. It had taken out all service in our area, and the trouble ticket was already over its restore-by service contracted time. For us, that meant no phones, no internet, no email being received by our server (which is bad, because if it goes on for more than 4 days they bounce permanently and mailing lists that I've actually subscribed to start dropping me). Fortunately, with
Vonage, when our circuit is unavailable it rolls over to my cell phone, so we could at least still keep receiving calls.
So, they finally got the two lines and the box restrung at around 9:30 of...not last night, but the night before, so the night of New Year's Day I guess that makes it. But my network is still not coming up. After much fussing and some additional ideas from friends (thanks!), I finally got it to start working again last night at a little after 8pm, but it was after 10pm when I finally got the last of it back up. Turns out it was a series of issues combined on my side:
- The cable between my DSL router and the hub it was plugged into had been bent for a while, so when I was fussing trying to figure out what was wrong, it killed it internally.
- The plastic clip thing on the ethernet plug on my server's side snapped off without me noticing, so it was pulling out part-way every time I'd try something with the other cables.
- The Vista laptop I was using to test with wasn't actually switching to a static IP when I told it to, it was still trying to get a DHCP address under the covers (apparently I'd missed a setting somewhere).
So, yeah. All better now. On the plus side, we did get a lot of errands done yesterday, and we feel much better today with all of that accomplished and our network back up. And our garbage picked up. *dance* (:
