I was a big fan (bigger than most) of the original Urban Legend and pretty much hated the second one (except for the brilliant opening death sequence). This direct to video sequel falls somewhere in between. It’s not really a sequel and has more in common with A Nightmare on Elm Street and Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night 2 than Urban Legend.
In 1969, Mary Banner a pretty high school girl is accidentally killed by some dumb ass jock who hides her body in the school basement. 35 years later some girls have a sleepover (where there’s a gratuitous pillow fight… not that I’m complaining mind you) and talk about the Bloody Mary urban legend where you say “Bloody Mary” three times in front of a mirror and she appears (one character says, “That’s just like Candyman!”). They do so and awaken the vengeful Mary who wants to kill the children of the people who caused her death. (She also wants her body to have a proper burial too.)
The death scenes are pretty outrageous and make this flick memorable. There’s a death by tanning bed (before Final Destination 3), a CGI spider attack and in the film’s most amazing scene a guy gets killed by pissing on an electric fence! The paramedic says, “Holy shit this guy’s dick is smoking!” Pure genius. At some point though Mary drops the whole urband legend angle and just kills a guy with a broken bottle and unfortunately the ending sucks. Director Mary Lambert also did Pet Sematary. The screenwriters also wrote X-Men 2 and Superman Returns.
