Is this my life now?

I'm working like a maniac. A coworker went to Ireland and I'm filling in some shifts, plus I've added an extra workday to my week now that school's over. Some of these shifts will end at 11p.m., which will be a stretch for me since my usual bedtime is 10:30p.m. A coworker suggested I just drink a lot of coffee, but I haven't had coffee of tea in ( Read more... )

nothing makes one sound more like a paranoid freak than explaining about the conspiracy against you

Now that must go on my list of quotable quotes...

Also, my portions have been smaller, I've taken my time eating the food I do eat and I've cut out the eating I used to do because I was bored.

Yes, those are all things that I've found have helped me get me eating more under control as well. Eating more reasonable portions (at restaurants, sometimes I get a takeout container right at the start and put half of my meal in there, if I know it's going to be more than I want to eat in one sitting) definitely helps. And distracting myself with other entertaining things helps curtail boredom-induced eating.

Oddly enough, the less I eat junk the less I want to eat junk.

Yes. I find that just as junk food can be habit-forming, so can healthy food. The more I get used to eating stuff that is actually good for me, the less good junk food tastes when I do have it, and the more I notice that it doesn't make me feel good afterwards. I still have some unhealthy food here and there, but much less than I once did, and a lot of kinds of junk food that I used to like just don't appeal to me at all any more.

I don't know if I can avoid the traditional pound-package of winter, but I'll try.

What I find sometimes helps with that is eating foods that feel richer and heavier, but are still healthy. In winter I tend to make a lot of thick soups and stews and things like that, and have them with dense, chewy sourdough bread. That way I can fulfill the desire for substantial, stick-to-your-ribs sorts of food, without compromising my health.
