Romana was doing the maths, sort of. Properly, she was standing in front of the pool table in the rec room, cue in hand, playing against herself and surveying the arithmetic behind it. Really, it was quite elementary, but in a pinch like this, she was quite up the challenge of seeing if such a simple sport could be made, well, more complex ( Read more... )

Stu strode in, making for the bookshelf when he saw her little hissyfit.

"Ain't the game's fault, Miss Romana," he teased, walking over to the jukebox as the song faded away and started up again with the Eagles.

Romana breathed out a sigh of relief as Stu came in and killed the song. She rolled her eyes slightly and gave him an exasperated smile.

"Maybe not, but it certainly is that machine's fault. It ruined my calculations," she replied, picking up the cue again.

"Whatcha calculatin'? Looks to me like yer shootin' pool."

The jukebox grew louder as he turned away from it, as if it wanted his attention.

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
'This could be Heaven or this could be Hell'

Stu just kicked backward against the side of it and the volume went back to a decent level as he smiled at her in return.

"Ain't nothin' but a jukebox."

"That's exactly what I'm doing." Romana smiled cheekily and nodded at the table. At the jukebox's persistence to be heard, she let out a small snigger. It looked like she wasn't the only one being taunted.

"Exactly," she agreed as she pointed to her game. "And, well, I was just in the midst of doing the angles. That's really all the game is."

"If it's the jukebox that's bothering you, it isn't going to shut up anytime soon," said Regina, matter-of-factly in the general direction of the girl playing pool. She knew the problem well.

Romana turned and gave the girl a look. That really hadn't been what she'd wanted to hear, despite the truthfulness of it. She arched an eyebrow at the faux-blonde girl. "That is something that I was aware of. But how charming of you to point it out regardless," she returned calmly.

Regina hadn't been aware that she was dealing with a bitch. It figured. "Yeah, whatever, I just thought you should know," she said.

"Clearly, redundancy is something you do very well. If I ever take a good tumble and need to be reminded of things, I'll come find you," Romana answered with a smirk. "Would you be a dear and go stand next to it?"

Ponder winces at the sharp sound of wood against wood and foot against floor. Then, as he is a misogynist*, he stands up from the table where he is sitting and working on his own calculations, and clears his throat:

"Er. Problem, Miss?"

It's possible there's one, and she's just frustrated with the sport. In which case Ponder Stibbons sympathizes, but she may feel free to discuss it with someone else. Ponder does not do sports.

*see: punctiliously polite to ladies

"Hmm? What?" Romana asked, breaking from her own bitterness to pick up her cue again and answer the stranger. She felt just a tad bad for interrupting someone else, but at the same time, remorse was something that she had never done very well or for very long. She glanced at the table for a moment before answering.

"Just a minor one in the form of an annoyance. The sudden appearance of music has disrupted my calculations."

"Yes, it does do," Ponder agrees.

A pleasant smile settles itself on his face. She's doing calculations. She's probably a witch.

"What are you calculating?"

Romana smiled and wrinkled her nose slightly at the balls, tiltling her head at the table, momentarily adjusting the angles before speaking. She looked back at him and shrugged.

"Oh nothing important. Just a bit of boredom, really, in the form of angular geometry. Basic things."

Sophie had been wandering around the compound and was pleased to find Romana playing pool in the rec room, although Romana herself didn't look very pleased.

"Not your particular choice of song?" Sophie ventured, picking up a cue and wiggling it a little. "I play badly, but I could be an easy mark I guess."

Romana was grateful when the song came to a close and the jukebox appeared to have no other opinions at the moment. It was simply better that way. She smiled at Sophie as the final notes died.

"Not terribly, but then again, is it ever anyones?" she replied with a shrug. "It's all maths; I daresay I could play poorly to match you."

Sophie laughed.

"If it was all math, I'd be good at it," she countered. "Some of it is luck."

Romana shrugged. "That too. But really, the maths help a great deal."

Veronica good mood was wearing thin. No, scratch that, it was pretty much gone; Logan had seen to that - Logan saying nice things, Logan not smirking, Logan missing her, Logan kissing her. He ruined her life by playing nice.

Still she grinned when she stepped into the room in the middle of a familiar song. "Rilo Kiley," she remarked cheerfully, and turned her smile to the other blonde. "You don't like Jenny Lewis?"

Romana turned to look at who had addressed her and shook her head at the petite blonde girl. "What? Oh no, not quite that." She sighed and rolled her eyes slightly at the lyrics. She gestured at the jukebox and gave the girl a mild smile mixed in with a cringe. "It's what the song says. I don't particularly care for the lyrics. They're well, rather pointed."

"Oh," Veronica said, nodding. "If you think that's pointed, just pray it doesn't play you 'It's a Hit.' I like most of their stuff, though." Stepping closer, she offered a hand and a grin. "Veronica Mars."

"I don't know that one, but I can only guess," Romana nodded, frowning slightly at the thought of something worse. She shook her head, banishing the thought and smiled as she accepted the girl's hand. "Fred."
