The biggest problem? Rodney didn't make John touch the chair. No one knows he has the gene. Even if he lives, what possible reason is there to add him to the Stargate programme? He's got nothing. The ending of Vegas strongly suggests that John's better off to the SGC dead.
Did canon ever address what Ronon did before becoming a runner? I have this yen to see him in a white labcoat, geeking out with Jonas Quinn....
Even if he lives, what possible reason is there to add him to the Stargate programme? He's got nothing. Ah, but Rodney thinks really highly of him and might have been able to talk Woolsey into sending someone out there to save him. So Ep 2 starts off with John in the hospital and Rodney saying "we couldn't save your car but we rescued your effects (the money) and you can leave if you like and we'll see that you're left alone." Then after almost turning to go, he adds, "of course, I like the way you think outside the box and I think I can offer you a job
( ... )
I just assumed they already knew he had the gene because they'd already met at least one other version of him in another AU ... one who presumably flew jumpers and operated other Ancient tech (or was at least still able to be "a hero").
I also just assumed Rodney didn't bother with any proof-by-touch because he knew this John wasn't really ready for it ... if ever. This John is on a pretty long slide into self-destruction, imo.
(I'm sure I heard Ronon or Teyla make a reference sometime in S4 or S5 to Ronon's study of poetry, but otherwise I don't think we ever heard of any actual work he did outside of his position as a Specialist in the military. I would totally buy the geeking out thing, though in my mind it would be over musty scrolls and forgotten libraries instead of white labcoats. Though, come to think of it, he did seem rather enamoured of carrying the nonclone!Beckett's bags and such for him whenever they were offworld. I don't know if that was in thanks for the doctor removing the tracking device or the Satedan equivalent
( ... )
Thank you! You've patched over some plotholes nicely. (I think the writers had a vague idea of Ronon being similar to the Japanese samurai, with the poetry and knives and all....)
I like what you've done with it. The only thing I'd change is that I'd make Teyla and Ronon Athosian and Satedan respectively, because I feel like that's integral to who they are as characters. Maybe their backgrounds within that framework are different, but I'd keep that element of it. Did Rodney say anything that said they hadn't met them in this AU? If so, it'd be easy enough to rectify that within the first season, and if not, well, it could go either way, with them being established within the Atlantis expedition or newcomers after the series starts.
But I'd bring them both to Earth, at least until the show moves to Atlantis. It'd be interesting to see Ronon as a more of a free agent working with the Atlantis expedition, and maybe they ask him to come to Earth to help hunt the Wraith who've come through the rift. I could see Teyla coming as part of a diplomatic team, and/or as an expert on some of the alien races that are falling through the rift. They'd need people with some knowledge of some of these races, right?
I like this idea. Jumping a bit from zillah's suggestion of keeping Teyla and Ronon as their respective cultures, it could be interesting to bring Ronon in as someone studying Ancient poetry and the legends around his culture's beliefs about the Ancients ... only to stumble accidentally into something connected with the rift and ending up enmeshed with the AU 'team
( ... )
now things like this, this kind of willingness to turn things sideways, is what i love about intelligent fandom. and this is also one.more.thing that might yet get me into this show, at least enough to know who the characters are when i read the wickedly good writing in the fanfiction.

No disrespect meant to those who enjoy it, but I've attempted to try it several times and just can't.
And in fairness, I'm Canadian and also can't stomach beer either, so it's not only "other" cultures that suffer from my lack of fortitude. ;-)
