I like this idea. Jumping a bit from zillah's suggestion of keeping Teyla and Ronon as their respective cultures, it could be interesting to bring Ronon in as someone studying Ancient poetry and the legends around his culture's beliefs about the Ancients ... only to stumble accidentally into something connected with the rift and ending up enmeshed with the AU 'team'.
I can't say that I've seen enough SG1 eps to know whether the analogy would be correct, but possibly he'd be the Pegasus' answer to Daniel? ;-)
(I forget which ep had him admit to having studied poetry ... it was a quiet background sort of moment around a table, if I recall.)
He could still be really scary when he needed -- in fact, it might be far more interesting that traditional Satedan poetry is performed with specific katas ... and perhaps that poet!geek!Ronon (and his people) don't even consider the possibility that these forms might be used for actual combat. Turns out, Ronon is a rather gifted poet. ;-)
(Erm, in my Sateda, they've remained isolated from active involvement with the Wraith so all of that is consigned to legend and lore also, until the fateful day ...).
I love that canon!Teyla knows how to whump arse rather well, and it annoys me to no end that she was often left to babysit the rescuees or whatever while the boys went off to make their boomsticks work. *sighs* In this AU, I'd love to see her still whumping arse, only rather more often and perhaps more obviously in charge of things when it comes to interacting with Earth-based groups.
Plus, that whole "bracing tea at dawn" thing should be a bit of a cultural bonding moment ... maybe it is so incredibly bitter and nasty that it is a heavily acquired taste. Athosians watch new acquaintances carefully for how they will express their response to it. (Imagine North Americans tasting Vegemite for the first time ... that sort of thing.)
