Even if he lives, what possible reason is there to add him to the Stargate programme? He's got nothing.
Ah, but Rodney thinks really highly of him and might have been able to talk Woolsey into sending someone out there to save him. So Ep 2 starts off with John in the hospital and Rodney saying "we couldn't save your car but we rescued your effects (the money) and you can leave if you like and we'll see that you're left alone." Then after almost turning to go, he adds, "of course, I like the way you think outside the box and I think I can offer you a job."
And maybe John's all "fuck you; I almost died out there." But then something freaky happens and he realizes that there might be more aliens out there than he thought and he ends up in the middle of yet another weird ass case, this time as a civilian and he finally gives up and takes the job.
Because John doesn't need the gene to act as an Earth based agent for NID or Homeworld Security or whoever. And you could even do something where we find out he has it only he doesn't realize what's going on and Rodney only finds out at the end of the season or something.
And no, Ronon never had a canon job other than "soldier" before he started running. It's be great to have him as one of their geeks. :) Well unless you take the deleted stuff from "Reunion," in which we (would have learned) learn that he was all artistic and painted and wrote poetry.
