Arrival - Welcome to Fort Wenachee! - OTA

Oct 06, 2010 14:22

Much like back in Japan there are a line of Humvees awaiting the team at the airport, which they are quickly ushered into and their bags - apart from their carry-ons - are loaded into a separate truck. It's about three in the afternoon as the trucks depart the airport and make the hour journey to their new camp.

The vehicles pull up alongside the ( Read more... )

Victor Creed didn't even bother making the slightest effort to hide his contempt. To say he didn't get along with authority figures was an understatement; sure, he'd shown a token amount of respect to Stryker, but that was because the Major let him get away with a lot of things which would, to any other military unit, have amounted to war crimes. With a distasteful sneer, he spat at the ground as Captain Sykes approached him, not even caring what kind of disciplinary measure that would result. As far as the feral was concerned, there were very few things left now which the military could exact on him as a punishment.

"What's this, a fuckin' travel brochure?"

The lasting relief of being off the damn plane was ruined slightly by the asshole of a general. It was familiar - too familiar. For a military unit, the team had been spoiled rotten. Logan hadn't realized how much he'd gotten used to it until now, when he felt a familiar irritation creep in. He didn't care for authority figures any more than Victor, but this was how things were right now, and they didn't have much of a choice in accepting it.

Of course, that made no difference to some people...

"Victor..." Logan stepped between his brother and the captain, his back towards the latter. Authority wouldn't help Sykes if Victor decided to play guitar on the guy's entrails. Saying nothing more, Logan just looked at his brother, willing him to calm down. They knew this, dammit - they'd had to deal with stuck-up assholes who didn't deserve their rank before. Not that Logan knew if Sykes was one of those captains, but he wouldn't be surprised. Few people were higher in rank than Victor and him, going by the laws of nature.

Stepping past the Cadet and confronted by Logan's back, Ethan waved the young man away with a tight smile before turning his attention back to Victor and his brother. He'd been briefed by his General, given access to all the files and backgrounds on his new company and team mates so Ethan wasn't surprised that Victor was one of the first to kick up with a bad attitude. Nor was he surprised that Logan had stepped in.

"Perhaps the cadet didn't make it clear enough to you Creed. It is not a travel brochure but a reference book in regards to guidelines and rules of Fort Wenachee. I wasn't aware that you had issues with your literacy, would you like me to look into signing you up to some classes?"

Ethan wasn't worried though, his skin was impenetrable - tests of all kinds of weapons had taken place and he wasn't foolish enough to confront Victor without allowing his mutation to kick into place. He wasn't about to reveal that to either of them though.

Rules. Rules weren't something that Ophelia was good at. Rules were something Ophelia seemed to stumble over and that posed a real problem for her. The entire time General Stone spoke, Ophelia felt a deep dread start to build in her stomach and coil up tighter.

She had to bite her lip just to keep it in, just to stop it bubbling out and her toes crossed in her boots and her fingers cramped up in her fist. Maybe she did get lost on her way to the store -it would make sense, she sometimes forgot why she wanted to go to the store or if she needed anything and really she could've just taken a wrong turn and ended up in the wrong building.

Maybe that what where everything went wrong! The store moved and she didn't go the right way. And now she had to call someone 'Sir' and wear their clothes and live their lives and...

"Don't feel swell, don't feel well, the hand's the tell, it's spiralling to hell." No, this was not going to be fun or nice or even remotely decent at all. How decidedly unfortunate.

Tabby was in a rather similar state of mind as she shifted her feet and crossed her arms at her waist, stuck between listening to the Suit and trying to figure out if she could easily take out the little bit of security she could see if there was ever a problem, it was an odd coping mechanism she'd picked up as a kid.
Sadly, contemplating the demolition of the base and checking out the hot soldier boy behind the General was not distracting her from the fact that she had just entered Army hell and Phe was next to her looking more nervous then she was.

Turning her head, tilting it slighting just to offset the imbalance that she felt, Ophelia gave a small, tight smile towards Tabitha. Nothing in the smile was manic, just this odd sense of trepidation and woe.

"In and out, it's worth a pout. At least together, scream and shout?" She'd listened at least when they told about living arrangements, and although Ophelia much preferred when she'd been able to come and go as she pleased, sleeping where she fell or climbed, she did rather enjoy company either way.

She didn't think it'd be a problem with Tabitha.

"You gotta be fucking kiddin' me," Jack said, clearly loud enough for everyone in the immediate vicinity. He hadn't heard this many rules and regulations since his own stint in 'Nam almost fifty years ago. Even back then, he'd chafed under authority. If he hadn't been such a damn good sniper, there was little doubt he would have lasted as long as he did.

Jack was used to being on his own. He'd been alone most of his life, following no code but his own. Even after he had joined up with the squad, he'd still kept up the independence that he demanded. Not even Stryker or Emma could cure him of that. But now he was expected to just give into all this authority? Bullshit. There was going to be blood over this. Hopefully, it wouldn't be literal.

The outcry was of little surprise to Ethan, accustom to hearing far worse during his time in training and with the Army. Striding over to Jack he started to recall the information he had on him, trying to decide which approach would be best to deal with this guy. Erring on the side of caution - Ethan had read that Hendley had a thing against mutants due to his history - he opted to go for the polite but respectful approach.

Standing opposite Jack, Ethan saluted, body ridgid and to attention before he adjusted his posture to one of at ease. "No kidding going on here Hendley."

No point beating about the bush either for that matter. Anyway. "I gather you served in Vietnam, it's a pleasure to meet a fellow soldier."

So this was the Army Captain Emma had mentioned to him on the flight. Jack gave him the once over. Aside from being a mutant, the hunter already knew this guys number. Back in his day, they called such men blue flamers, since they were so eager to follow orders it seemed like they had flames coming out of their-

"Don't you ferget it, soldier. I was taking shrapnel at Phah That before you were a twinkle in your momma's eye." Jack took a step forward, his right good eye trained on Ethan's own. The fact Ethan had used his name, last or first, irked him quite a bit. "Stay outta my way, boy, and we won't have any problems."

Ethan really didn't care what Hendley thought about him, nor did he particularly care for his attitude. Perhaps he'd been too considerate in assuming that Hendley was going to respect the army ways.

With a tight smile Ethan reverted back into his Drill Sergeant tone of voice, though he'd gone through the extensive training and risen through the ranks, he had made a point of experiencing various aspects just so that he could empathise with his fellow soldiers.

"Mutant or not Hendley you are on my base and whether you were taking shrapnel or not bares little or no impact on your time here. Far as I'm concerned you're nothing more than a lowly soldier, brought in to keep these mutants in line and from what I've heard you have failed in your task." Oh yes apparently all those times the mutants had been causing chaos it had been tallying up against Hendley in a neat little file. The General had been wondering what good was a mutant hunter if he couldn't keep the rabble in line ( ... )

There was the distinct possibility that Angel might cry. Oh, she didn't care about the rule or authority. She'd been a puppet for one team or another since before she wore a training bra. No, the issue that had her fighting a lip wibble was her shoes. It had taken months to smuggle in all her contraband. The Egyptian cotton sheets would be hard to give up. The scented candles and girlie crooner music would be tough too but when she thought about all the shoes she'd squirreled away in Japan that she would now not be able to wear, she was heartbroken. She wouldn't even be allowed to regularly visit them.

Instinctively, her arms wrapped around her carry on bag. There were no shoes in it but it was symbolic of his larger brothers and sisters on their way into lock up. "Will we be allowed access to them when we get leave?" She asked looking for some kind of silver lining.

Ethan noted that the woman looked about ready to dissolve into tears and sighed softly to himself. He really hoped that she wasn't the type who was going to cry at every opportunity over her little command and instruction he gave. Heading over Ethan stopped directly in front of Angel.

"Jones," He could easily see that she was clinging to her bag like it was a life line and then took in her attire with a raised eyebrow. Although not as outrageously dressed as some of the other team mates. "If you are referring to your bag you will be returned all items when you eventually leave the camp. Should you wish to apply for leave and are granted some you will also be able to access your extra personal items then however they will all be kept in a safe, clean location."

His words were somewhat reassuring even if his demeanor wasn't. Stupid ugly combat boots. Stupid olive drabe in their stupidly unflattering styles. And they couldn't even customize! UGH, it was enough to make her want to stomp her feet in a wholly childish way but she didn't.

Instead, she gave the soldier a straight faced nod though she didn't look happy about it. "Thank you."

Nicky didn't even blink. Sure he'd enjoyed the freedom of the previous camps but it didn't erase the years of rules and regulations he'd followed before. He shook his head listening to the others they'd get used to it or there would be trouble he was sure of that.

He straightened up unconsciously his previous training creeping back in to the back of his mind. It was easy to fall back but he fought it a little. No need to give up all his freedom after all.

Nicky really hoped that this didn't go too badly.

John was stood near to Nicky and could see how the kid was settling into the camp already, back held straight and posture of a true soldier - it was both impressive and a pity to see how Nicky was responding to the environment.

To the likes of John this was perfectly normal, he didn't mind rules and structure. There was no doubt that the team needed it too but still he wasn't quite sure how well they'd all cope being put into this environment and expected to just take the new rules and regulations as the norm.

Moving to stand beside Nicky, John settled a hand on the kids shoulder. "You alright there?"

Nicky jumped a little under his hand. He had been so focused he hadn't noticed John coming up on him. He settled down still holding himself tense. "I'm fine John. Just...remembering the way things were."

He hated the memories that seemed to be stirred up by just the feel of this place. Nicky shook his head a little trying to clear out the stray thoughts.
