I ended up not planting out my annual bed Saturday. I decided to rest during the hot part of the day and pick up again around 7pm. I was able to pull back the black tarp from last year, clear off the plants that had decayed on the top thereof, spread the compost (but not till in; way too tired) and replace the tarp, but by the time I'd finished ( Read more... )

I'm taking a break from planting right now. I bought a load of compost yesterday to enrich my poor soil (I have been mucking around in years past with peat moss, soil pep, and steer manure), and I'm planting some of the perennials I bought when I went in a week ago to get a new faucet for the tub. It's been kinda interesting at work for the past three weeks. I spend 8 hours here as usual, but I've had nothing to work on. The project I was hired for got suspended so that everyone could work on FDA recommendations that came down after a lengthy audit. I've looked over the perennials in my yard this year, and I've just gone through all the photos of past years, and my suspicions have been confirmed: with a few exceptions, the perennials get smaller every year, and many flat-out die early deaths.

It's been rainy and "cool" these last few days. The type of storm is a bit unusual for this time of year: it glided in slowly and has stayed like a welcome houseguest, dropping steady rain or sprinkles at any hour of the day. Ha! This is funny. I went into the lunchroom today and found the April 2006 edition of Crosstalk: The Journal of Defense Software Engineering, which is where I used to work before going to Niche. Seven years later, the guts of the magazine look almost exactly the same: same fonts, same column structure, same author box. Only the graphics aren't ( Read more... )
