Since July, Simon has regularly been catching mice, about one a month (and I'm pretty sure that the first one he caught was actually a rat). Around 5 am this morning, I woke to Simon making a bit of a ruckus--he was knocking around the springy door stop attached to the wall, which is unusual behaviour for him. Last night around 3 or 4 am, I discovered a dead mouse on my bedroom floor; Simon had apparently killed a mouse. He's caught several birds before, but never a mouse, so my landlords and I just thought he was uninterested or incapable of catching mice. Wanting to go to bed, I opened the front door and whistled several times for Simon to come in. However, to my surprise, Simon didn't come, so I decided to close the door, figuring that he'd come home within a few minutes, which he does if he doesn't come immediately. Last night I had a horrible dream. I dreamed that Simon died (nothing dramatic, just old age or something), and then I bought a kitten. It was pretty upsetting.

When I arrived home at 6pm today, Simon went outside. Simon killed another bird this afternoon. I was outside taking out the recycling, and he walked up to me with a dead bird in his mouth, looking very proud of himself. Unfortunately, I'm reinforcing his behaviour by praising him and giving him positive attention when he brings me a dead bird, because I feel so guilty about throwing them out and ( Read more... )

Every once in a while, Simon will kill a bird. In the past he's brought them in the house (something I was not pleased about), but he now seems to realize that I don't appreciate that. Is it unusual for a cat who is outside to come when you whistle?

Simon just brought in a dead bird, a chickadee, I think :( I heard him outside, and instead of scratching at the door to be let him, he made this quiet sounding meow, so I knew he probably had a bird in his mouth.
