Every once in a while, Simon will kill a bird. In the past he's brought them in the house (something I was not pleased about), but he now seems to realize that I don't appreciate that. Last week he killed yet another bird, scratched at the door to be let in, and thankfully left the bird outside. (Also, he apparently killed a second bird last week--I just found some bird feathers on my doorstep, but my landlord said he had found and discarded the head.)
Just a few minutes ago I heard Simon at the door, scratching to come in. I opened the door, and there was another dead bird. Simon came in but left the bird outside, thankfully. I don't want to encourage him, but I did pet him and give him praise, as it seems mean to scold him when he thinks he's doing something that will please me. I'm not thrilled that he's killing birds, but at least he's no longer bringing them in!
