So I was riding the Red Line home tonight when a woman sitting next to me called someone.

"Are you awake?" she said. "Okay. Cool. Listen - so I just got past Belmont, so I'm going to be at Howard soon, and I was just thinking... If you're awake, can you... you know?"

As the sun sets over Chicago's downtown Loop area, it lights the sky with blazing colors. That light fills the Loop, reflecting off the towering skyscrapers, the 'L' train tracks that run above the streets and the Clark/Lake station transfer walkway that is higher still.

People walk the streets below, unaware of the beauty above them.

Unlike the Howard Outage situtation, I didn't find myself in the middle of the news. Heck, the only reason why I found out about it at all was because vladiatorr posted on his Facebook page that there was a derailment, and someone in the comments mentioned that it was near Granville 'L' station. The Loop elevated 'L' train tracks have been a part of downtown Chicago since the 1890s. They became so iconic that when, in the 1970s, the CTA considered moving the tracks underground, there was public backlash. As the result, the entire elevated loop became a national landmark, and one station was chosen to be restored to as close to its original ( Read more... )

" Millionaire Hoy" offers a humorous look at riding CTA buses in wintertime.

As someone who rode those buses for the two years i was at UIC, I agree with pretty much everything he said.

As any Chicago 'L' rider knows, sometimes, trains get delayed without any real explanation. Oh, sure, we get an announcements about equipment failure and some and such, but those are automated, so they don't count for much.
