“Look, Abby, this is really cool.” Connor arranged the eggs so they stood uniformly upright and then carefully stood on the shells. “They’re strong enough to take my weight. Isn’t that incredible?”
Abby smiled. “That’s great, Conn.”
“D’you wanna try?”
“Sure,” she agreed, indifferent, “but some other time. I’m about to go out.”
His face fell. “But you’re back for dinner, yeah?”
“No.” She turned away, allowing the familiar feeling of irritation to push down a sudden pang of remorse. He tried so hard.
As she reached the door she heard a muffled thud and the sound of Connor swearing.
