Inspired again...

So, with isabelladangelo sharing a portrait with me of Eleanora of Toledo wearing a lovely outfit in the color of sea green/watchet blue that I have, I remembered that I actually have some trim that I've never used, that I had bought a few years ago from a friend ( Read more... )

dyeing, fabric, costume, gown

Which... the portrait or the fabric & trim combo?

Yes.

Seriously, I heart that red trim with that fabric (at least the way it looks on my monitor.) The cream is nice too, but the red pops!

Why not a loose gown with the blue + red, and underneath the cream + cream? Use the color palette of the portrait, if not the actual shapes....

I've been thinking that same idea. I have the kirtle and sleeves for the gown already, in golden yellow and black. The black will at least tie in with the trim's black. But I am thinking of making a spiral slashed sleeve to use as well, and will probably do that in the cream and gold. Then someday when I have a stable weight, make a fitted doublet and petticoat to go with it. That would work well, I think.

I love those colors together and that green is one of my favorites!

Ok, so you think it will work alright together?

From my monitors it looks great. I was just looking at the comments below and maybe try some narrow dark trim the color of the background(is it black?) beside it as well, if you have some. Where did you get the silk from? It looks like it took the dye well.

Sorry it took a bit to get back to this post (taxes).

Anyway... if my memory serves right, it was bought from Silk Connection (http://www.silkconnection.com/). It is silk broadcloth, and it is an even weave silk that is a bit stiffer like taffeta, but not nearly as crisp or stiff. Taffeta usually is chemically enhanced to have that crinkle and crispness (which makes it unwashable usually).

I'd be inclined to add a gold lace edging to the sides of the trim. It gives it a more finished look, and breaks up the straight line a bit to give an effect closer to the embroidery. You could even add beads in a pattern along that edge, to spread it out even more.

That's what I am thinking of, too. I have some smaller trims in golds that I am going to pull out, and test with the fabric and trim to see which ones will work. I just hope I have enough of the smaller trims.
