Now my mother and sisters refuse to talk to me (without a third party intermediary of the religious persuasion). This battle is not new. Trying to let go, trying to hold on. We had a party tonight to burn our mortgage. We invited our family and friends to write down something they would like to be free of, then we put all the notes in a decorated box and threw the box in a fire. It was still warm enough this morning to have out tea (hers) and coffee (mine) on the patio with a fire. Later, on to brunch and more architecture hunting in Oberlin.

As I watched my fire last night I thought for the first time that perhaps dying might be more like the peaceful glittering of the ember as it drifts toward heaven rather the angry burn of the kindling as it's consumed by the flame.
