I've been elected Director of Public Relations for the United Nations Association at UCF. I'm excited to be in this position especially since it means I am guaranteed a spot at Conferences. We have one coming up SRMUN (South Regional Model UN) that will be held in Atlanta, Georgia. I'm going to be one of the ones driving but I'm going to need training beforehand because I still don't have the entire Model UN system down. I'm really excited though.
Pi Sigma Alpha (The Political Science Fraternity) is restarting its chapter here at UCF and I'm going to become involved with them as well. They're not the typical type of Fraternity. Their fee is like normal clubs, at 30 bucks, and they are still in the process of trying to find out what kind of organization it's going to be. I'm hoping they lean more towards engaging the citizenry in civic education. I hope it doesn't become a group that is purely social. I could spend my money and time doing better things.
Thanks to Bianca giving us the idea. A couple of us from my Third Wave Feminism class are trying to get together a Take Back the Night march in Downtown Orlando. TBTN is an event created in the 90s that can be used several ways; I think we're aiming towards empowering victims and survivors of rape, sexual assault, etc. to come out and reclaim the streets. The point of the march is that womyn (and men) are not safe in the streets at night and are victims to burglary, assault, murder, rape, sexual assault, verbal assault, etc. and the march brings these sorts of social problems into the limelight so everyone realizes that this isn't the sort of thing we should just accept as unchangeable truth but something that we can all work towards changing. This is going to be a major project but we're going to do it through UCF's chapter of the National Organization for Women and hopefully get some school funding for the project.
I feel like I've had a lull in my studies recently but today going back to classes and catching up on my textbooks has reinvigorated a love for my major. I think I'm finally leaning towards a specialization that will give me more direction in my potential work. I'm heading for a specialization in politics of developing nations (Latin America, Africa, Middle East, etc.) because I don't think I will fit in (nor would I want to) with the established power politics of the Western world. Also, as a child of Central America I feel obligated to try and alleviate the suffering of my brethren back at home. That or maybe I'm just being self-righteous. We'll see.
Bill Clinton came to UCF on Wednesday to speak on behalf of the Obama campaign. He gave a short 30 minute speech about the need for change and such in America. Basically singing the Obama campaign lines but it was still awesome to see the former President here at our campus. The amount of people who showed up was also absolutely amazing seeing as the school was only notified 3 days beforehand that he was coming.
We're also doing another Burma Shave protest today in front of the school. Woo.
