An old habit I have from being stationed in Northern Japan and finishing school in Upstate New York is that from October through March my car has permanently living in it:

• a short handled snow shovel
• a wind-up or shake-charged flashlight/radio
• a heavy blanket
• a beach towel
• a bag of mulch, or top-soil, or sand

This morning I went by the house to check on things and feed the cats and found that the power was back on at the house; and that by some miracle I do not fully understand most of our treasured marine aquarium livestock appears to have survived! I noticed that it had stopped snowing at 3:00pm, and decided to clear the snow from the driveway, fire escape paths, hot tub, and front steps. Either I am getting really good at this or there was less snow, because despite the howling wind (which continues to this moment) I was able to clear everything in a moment less than 90 minutes ( Read more... )

I have already cleared the driveway twice this morning; and it is already buried again. Being in the lee of a mountain means we generally don't get as much wind here; but the snow just gently dumps on us when there is a local fall; we typically accumulate 2-3 times as much as the top of the mountain and the surrounding area ( Read more... )

I went out to sweep aside the two inches of fluffy powder we had last night before sutragirl packed any of it down with her car and was a bit disturbed to find that the 2 inches of fluffy powder sits on top of 3/16 of an inch of sheet ice ( Read more... )

snolan2 and I drove up to Rome to visit jellicho and his daughters who live in Utica, Herkimer, and Camden. There was a winter snow-storm in Norwich and Utica Thursday night, but thankfully the roads were clear by the time we drove through Friday night. Wow, it's been years since I was in Upstate New York during a snowstorm, but that is being changed right now.

jellicho has her RoadRunner broadband connection now (an amazing Wave Comm contractor came out in the middle of the blizzard and hooked up her connection, even had to climb the pole outside, though we told he he could come back after the storm). ( Read more... )
