Year-End Fic Meme!

Dec 31, 2016 21:43

It has been years since I could do this year-end meme. I'm rather thrilled to be able to reprise it again!

Fics Written This Year --

1. Daughter of Wisdom (PJO; Annabeth, Gen)

(I'm counting this as written because it's in the works posting-wise but more that 75% complete.)

2. Just a Head Cold (PJO; Percy/Annabeth)

3. Friendship and Bravery (HP; Neville, Gen)

4. Erised (HP; Ron, Gen)

5. Trivia (HP; Tonks, Gen)

6. Setting Off (HP; Molly, Weasleys, Gen)

7. Five Days (Partials; Samm, Kira, Gen)

(This was mostly written in 2015, but a bit in 2016 … and tagged on shiikifics as 2016, so I'm going to include it in this list.)

8. A Winter's Tale (PJO; Percy/Annabeth)

(It's only on tumblr at the moment because of the secret santa thing, but it will get filed away on LJ as 2016.)

Ficlets

1. November Blessings (The Scorpio Races; Puck/Sean)

2. Dealing with Dragons (HP; Charlie, Gen)

3. After the Troll (HP; Hermione, Gen)

4. Heights (HP; Neville, Gen)

5. Standard Practice (HP; Minerva, Gen)

6. Bouncing (HP: Augusta, Gen)

7. A Conversation (HP; Dumbledore, Flamels, Gen)

8. Petunia Always Knew (HP; Petunia, Lily, Gen)

9. Scar (HP; Harry, Petunia, Gen)

10. Rumours (HP; Minerva, Gen)

Drabbles

1. First String (HP; Alicia, Gen)

2. The Morning Post (HP: Petunia, Gen)

WiPs

1. Daughter of Wisdom (almost done but not quite)

2. The Golden Fleece (technically all written, but since the editing and posting will take me into 2017-and I won't have posted anything at all this year, it's gonna be a 2017 fic)

3. The Curse of Lemnos (something I have in the works for PJO fandom)

4. Quest (a half-written Annabeth fic)

5. Seasons of Change (which first appeared in 2007 as a WiP and … yeah. It's still in my folder. I actually wrote some of it this year … with a huge makeover in terms of plot and perspective. But then I stalled again.)

6. The Great Prophecy (a 90%-ish written Annabeth fic … which I will dust off and finish at some point)

7. An untitled bit that is currently meant to be a missing moment from MoA but exists only as a handwritten page in my writing notebook, which hasn't even been transferred to the computer, so that's how raw it is as a WiP.

8. A Jacob/Queenie piece that I started as a drabble but has ballooned into ficlet size and may yet continue on to full fledged fic.

So the total tally:

No. of Fics (> 1,000): 8

No. of Ficlets (300-1,000): 10

No. of Drabbles (< 300): 2

WiPs (worked on this year, that is): 8

Altogether: 20 pieces of (published) writing. This has been my most productive year so far! Compared to what I've done in the past, it's paltry, but it has been my most prolific year in a loooong time. Also given that at least one of the fics is the longest multi-chapter I've ever written (and my NaNo broke that record shortly after) I would say I am very proud of the leaps and bounds I made getting back into writing. And would like to squish PJO for basically getting me back into the groove.

Pairing written most often: I think most of these are gen? Despite the long hiatus, I definitely have not moved away from being primarily a gen writer.

Character written most often: Probably Annabeth, though I feel that way because I basically wrote two massive thudding tracts from her PoV. If you go by actual number of works, though ... actually it still is Annabeth, tying with Petunia at 3 works each.

My favourite fan fic this year:
Written by me: I'm really fond of my first foray into PJO, and Daughter of Wisdom is my real baby (though I very much like how my sequel to that went/is going, too).

Read: I haven't even completely written up all the recs I want to! This is probably going to be something of fernwithy's, as she's the one writer I've faithfully followed in fandom. I wish she'd continued with her fic, The Belly of the Beast. And I hope she doesn't stop with Neville Longbottom and the Garden of the Hesperides. Though I did enjoy greatly NoahPhantom's Albus Potter series. And in PJO, I thought greenconverses's stuff very well-written.

My best fan fic this year: 'Best' can be quite subjective. I want to put in DoW because it was such a massive project and I feel like I did it as best as I could, and I was certainly very happy with many parts of it. But I also knew some bits could have been better ... and I suppose that's the whole issue with a multi-chapter! In terms of one-shots, I'd have to say A Winter's Tale. I'm very happy about how that one turned out.

Most fun writing: Definitely Daughter of Wisdom. And it's sequel, except I'm not counting that except as a WiP this year.

Sexiest fic: Lol, this one always makes me laugh. Take your pick of any of the pairing fics I actually wrote. Just a Head Cold had some snuggling I think? And I hinted at some action in A Winter's Tale except it got interrupted. November Blessings was maybe sexual-tension charged if you squint?

Yeah, I don't make much of a romance writer, I'm afraid. I might need to read more bodice-ripper novels. (Wait, I don't actually read any of those either. Hm, that probably explains it!)

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: Daughter of Wisdom got me to know Annabeth a lot better. It was a new fandom for me, so that one really allowed me to explore the characters and form my headcanons for them!

Hardest fic to write: Hm, my WiP, The Golden Fleece, by virtue of being a NaNo project. But then, given how I completed it, I would say the actual writing process was a lot smoother than any other fic! So, I'm going to go with the HP chapter-fics as that was kind of my exercise in getting back into writing. I think First String or Dealing with Dragons might have been the hardest of the lot because I didn't feel very inspired in those chapters. (Which I think were also the ones just before I stalled out on the project.)

Biggest disappointment: I don't really feel disappointed with the actual writing outcomes of any of my fic. I suppose in terms of response, it's mostly disappointing, but I wasn't expecting much anyway because of how fandom has moved on. Feedback is nice, but not the main reason I write!

Most telling fic: I don't really know what this question is trying to get at. Telling as in most obvious of my style? I don't know. I think my style may have changed a fair bit since I was last writing fanfic. I hope it has, anyway. Writing my multi-chapters feels like it's given me a different sort of tool to write, like I can adapt my style to the requirements of the story I want to tell. Also, writing heavily in another fandom is a very different exercise, since PJO style and HP style are extremely different.
