Half of the Moon
Chapter Fifteen
By: Sharl/zielddhy

Changmin shut down his laptop and stretched. It was his day off but there was a document he needed to check so he was working just now. Besides Junsu was still sleeping and as such it didn’t leave Changmin with a lot to do around the house. He then tried to keep himself busy by reading a couple of books. However he quickly lost interest in them after the first few pages turned out to be really boring and pointless.

Siwon shot him a look when Changmin passed by him in the living room for the seventh time, obviously irritated because a pacing Changmin was an annoying Changmin. Being considerate, Changmin shuffled his way out of the living room to the kitchen. Maybe some food would calm him down.

Yoohwan stood behind the stove, stirring something that smelled really good it made Changmin’s stomach growled. However Yoohwan’s face was tight. “What’s wrong?” Changmin said.

“Nothing.”

“Hey, look at me.”

He turned around but he didn’t look at Changmin. This worried Changmin some more. Something was obviously bothering Yoohwan and the man rarely looked like this. He was the type that was more easy-going, rarely keeping a secret unless it involves Yoochun.

Oh shit, was it Yoochun? Were they arguing? Changmin had a foreboding feeling that they indeed were arguing. He mentally cursed himself for being too overprotective towards the pack members. He was not good with comforting people and all that, he was more of a tell-me-or-I’ll-leave kind of type. What he needed was Junsu, but Junsu was still sleeping.

Yoohwan seemed to notice that Changmin was awkward and so he (sort of) smiled. “It’s okay, no big deal. Yoochun is being well, Yoochun. He’ll come around soon enough.”

Changmin smiled tightly. He really appreciated that Yoohwan wasn’t pushing to this, and kind of bad because he really couldn’t do anything to help. He could listen to Yoohwan, but there’s no guarantee he could stay quiet and not reprimand Yoochun. And besides, if it was something that’s got to do with their mate bond, it wasn’t his place to intervene. So he stepped closer to Yoohwan and hugged the man, offering comfort.

“I can wake Junsu up if you need to talk to him.”

Yoohwan shook his head no. “It’s fine, I just need to wait until Yoochun is finished seething on this. Do you want a bowl?”

“What?”

“This cream soup. And there are some toast in the oven. The salad is in the fridge. We can have a small meal while waiting for Junsu to wake up.”

Changmin smiled wider. He walked over to the cupboard and got few bowls and plates. The salad and toast were quickly prepared and by the time Yoohwan finished spooning out the cream soup, Minho walked in. “Do I smell food?”

“Yoohwan is making magic.”

“Bless you, Yoohwan, bless you.” Minho sat down on the chair, lay his head on the table and groaned. He looked especially tired. Changmin knew the clothing store Minho was working at was being remodeled few weeks back. It should have made things easier because the store was not operating at all during renovation period. Maybe the remodeling was done and now they were back in full force; a newly opened store usually had a special discount and of course it would attract more customers.

Thankfully Minho voluntarily offered an explanation without being asked. “We’re carrying this new line from one designer and he’s driving me crazy, seriously. It’s like we don’t have enough problems with the special discount and the demanding customers, now we have to deal with bitchy designers too??”

Changmin just laughed and took a huge bite of his toast. ‘Bitchy designers’, this was the first time he heard Minho swear. This designer must be really special.

Siwon’s head popped in by the door. “I smell food.”

“Your timing is perfect,” Yoohwan answered, “this is the last bowl.”

“There are two uneaten bowls left.”

“One for Yoochun and one for Junsu.”

Changmin smiled at Yoohwan, thanking him that he still remembered to put aside a portion for Junsu. These two had really been close friends, especially since the problem with that pack Yoochun and Yoohwan met and the fact that Yunho was angry at them for longer than necessary. Changmin had seen Yoohwan speaking with Junsu in their room more than once.

And yes, Changmin and Junsu now roomed together. They decided to move in together a week after the full moon was over. Changmin couldn’t be happier, he now got to see Junsu every night and woke up with Junsu’s smell around him in the morning. Talk about the best thing in the world. Junsu was adorable in his sleep; he mumbled and sometimes hogged the bed (and the blanket) but Changmin found that he couldn’t be mad.

Not when it means Changmin could snap a few pictures of Junsu sleeping and set it as his phone’s background. He didn’t care if it made him look like a lovesick teenager because he really was a lovesick teenager when it came to Junsu.

“What’s his name? This designer?” he heard Siwon asking. “Is he a big label and all that?”

Minho opened his mouth to answer but then shut it immediately. He frowned. “That’s the weird thing. I can’t remember his label, but his name is Key.”

Yoohwan snorted into his own soup. “That’s a funny name.”

“I think it’s his nickname. I mean, who would name their kids as ‘Key’ right?”

Yoohwan shrugged. Minho then launched into a full explanation about the designer and his bitchy attitude. Then Changmin sensed that Junsu was waking up. A quick check on their bond confirmed that. Junsu was still drowsy but he was no longer sleeping.

Where are you?

In the kitchen. Yoohwan made cream soup and he saved a bowl for you.

‘Kay.

Five minutes later Junsu staggered into the kitchen. He was wearing Changmin’s sweater and looked positively bleary. Changmin resisted the urge to shake him awake because Junsu was not allowed to look that cute to anyone except Changmin. But Junsu would probably get mad if Changmin really did that.

And so he only watched as Junsu sat down and said his thanks to Yoohwan. From the way his smile faltered, Changmin knew Junsu picked up that something was obviously wrong with Yoohwan. Hopefully it was nothing serious and like Yoohwan said, Yoochun would come around soon enough.

If he didn’t, Changmin might be forced to do something before things got ugly.

+

Changmin shook his fur, keening a bit because a change was still a little painful no matter how dominant you are. Your body structure became something else, bones sticking out and retracting in places you prefer not to know because it might be disgusting. The Second looked around, trying to get used with how everything seemed different when he’s in his wolf form.

A whimper caught his ears and he immediately ran towards where Junsu was. Junsu was still lying down, still shaking a bit because of the change. Changmin licked his mate’s ear and barked once when Junsu’s eyes opened. He flooded their bond with comfort. He nuzzled Junsu again before the submissive stood on shaky paws. They were going to go for a run, Changmin needed to patrol the border because this was part of his pack duties and Junsu wanted to come.

When Junsu had stopped shivering, he licked Changmin once. Thank you.

It was amazing how Junsu could make Changmin feel so giddy with just one word. Okay two words, but the point remained. Junsu leaped forward and started to run, Changmin followed behind closely. He could feel how happy Junsu was. And a happy Junsu made a happy Changmin. They hadn’t had a good run for a while and today was the first time they were able to do so, no wonder Junsu was itching to run already.

They were halfway through the border when Changmin smelled something in the air. He stopped running and sniffed. There was an unidentified pack of wolves coming their way. Eight to nine wolves strong. Changmin snarled lowly. Other werewolves were not supposed to go into their territory without Yunho’s permission. And since neither Yunho nor Jaejoong mentioned anything about these wolves, it meant that the wolves were unwelcomed. They might even be hostile.

Or maybe they were just passing through, but still. They should have asked for permission first especially since from the smell of it, these werewolves were in their wolf form instead of human form. Wolf form was much more dangerous.

The Second looked at Junsu who seemed confused and a little bit scared. Junsu was not familiar with this, if things got ugly this might just be his first confrontation with another pack. He then tried to send the submissive calming waves and thankfully it worked. Junsu stopped shaking and merely shuffled closer to Changmin.

Changmin called for help using the pack bond. Almost instantly his pack members responded, even Minho and Siwon who were not at the house. The ones at the pack house immediately changed because they could run much faster as wolves rather than as humans. He could feel Yunho was getting angry, and an angry Yunho was always a good thing for the pack in this situation; no one could trespass his land without groveling and begging for forgiveness later.

But the big question remained: what were these wolves doing here?

The unidentified wolves caught up to Junsu and him by the clearing few miles in from the border. To Changmin’s worst fear, these wolves looked hostile. His own pack was still on their way here, although they were already running as fast as they could, it will take some time before they got here.

He tried to appear menacing, drawing himself to his full height. Changmin immediately knew which one was the Alpha. Other wolves had their tails lowered in submission, but the Alpha’s tail stood tall, a sign of his dominance among the pack. He was a big black wolf, and there was a deep scar on his torso. The scar looked recent which meant the pack just got into a fight recently. From what he sensed, this other Alpha was not as dominant as Yunho (thank God) maybe not even as dominant as Changmin himself.

But there were nine wolves in their pack, including the Alpha while Changmin was alone with Junsu. We have to protect him, Hedwig said, already growling because Junsu was obviously trying not to look scared, no one hurts our mates.

Calm down, we have to make sure they are won’t be attacking us until Yunho arrives.

Yunho hummed in agreement in the pack bond. It was a smart move. Maybe Changmin could delay the confrontation as long as possible, just until Yunho and the rest of the pack arrived. Because no matter how dominant and strong you are, nine verses two did not look very good at all.

Suddenly the other Alpha spoke. “Well now, I didn’t expect to see you here. I want to go after the disgusting incest pair but behold, look what I found.”

Changmin stopped growling. As far as he knew, he never met this other Alpha so what the hell was he saying?

And then he realized: this wolf was not speaking to him, he was speaking to Junsu. Changmin could see Junsu’s eyes widened for a second before recognition hit him. A sudden fear seeped through the mate bond. His fear was so strong Changmin himself could almost feel it himself. Junsu was scared. He was beyond scared. Changmin began to panic. Junsu? What is it? Who is he?

But Junsu was not answering. His body began to visibly shake, he was crouching down on the ground, whimpering in submission. Changmin’s pleading could not get through to him, it was like Junsu was lost in his memories and Changmin couldn’t help but feel the déjà vu from when Junsu was screaming in his car all those months back. Jaejoong was already asking why Junsu was so terrified but neither of them could answer.

A sudden realization came to Changmin. Junsu was behaving exactly like when he remembered those awful memories. Was it possible that this other Alpha was a part of Junsu’s old pack? But didn’t he say that all of them were dead already?

A wave of protectiveness ran through Changmin. Hedwig was not pleased and neither was Changmin. He growled at this other Alpha, who just seemed amused rather than scared. He was obviously confident in their number. “Don’t tell me, that whore now has a mate.”

If it wasn’t for Yunho’s direct order not to attack, Changmin would’ve sunk his teeth to this Alpha already.

The Alpha laughed. “I heard that your pack was obliterated by the Marrock himself, so I just assumed you were also killed. If I knew you had survived, I would have taken you for myself.” His face turned a feral grin. “I’ve only sampled you once when your old Alpha owed me money but I can still remember how much fun I had that time. Your whimpering, squirming body underneath me felt really good. And your crying face was such a pleasure for me, your screaming echoing around the room as I fucked you real hard.”

Changmin’s control snapped.

Before he knew it, he had lunged at this disgusting wolf. He was disobeying Yunho’s orders but he didn’t care. The idea that his mate was hurt because of this wolf sent all rational thoughts away. He didn’t care that he was actually declaring a war against another pack, ignoring Yunho who was obviously trying to reign Changmin in. There was only one thing he cared about: this wolf has to die by his teeth and claws, Changmin would make sure of that.

The other Alpha was surprised but his reflexes were good. They rolled over on the ground, snarling and growling as they tried to sink their teeth into each other. The rest of his pack seemed stunned that their Alpha was suddenly attacked. But they didn’t remain quiet for long. One of them lunged at Changmin, sinking his teeth onto Changmin’s right front leg.

Changmin howled when the teeth bit into his flesh, however the anger overrode the pain. His left front paw smacked at the other wolf, sending him flying to the ground thirty feet away. His attention was back to the Alpha who dared to hurt his mate again. He managed to bite into the other Alpha, but it wasn’t deep enough to kill him.

Five other wolves moved and suddenly Changmin was thrown off. He yelped a bit as his body hit the ground hard. But he quickly got onto his feet, just in time to dodge two wolves who lunged at him. The remaining three now attacked him at the same time. The fourth and fifth one joined almost immediately.

Too much, it was too much for Changmin. As a Second most dominant in Yunho’s pack, he was a very strong wolf but fighting five werewolves at once was just too much. There were teeth everywhere, sharp pain radiated throughout his body - his legs, torso, and back. Suddenly there was a sharp pain from his stomach and Changmin knew that one of the wolves had gotten lucky. There were now deep gashes all over his body.

With much difficulty Changmin managed to throw two wolves off, but soon the rest of the wolves attacked him again. He could hear the other Alpha’s laugh. He could sense his own pack’s anger and concern, as they ran faster. Yunho’s concern was evident in his voice. Hold on Changmin, we’re almost there!

One of the wolves then threw him to the trees and Changmin could hear his bones cracking. He tried to stand up but somehow he couldn’t. The pain was overwhelming. Changmin had been in his own fair share of fights before but so far this was the worst. He could feel his blood pouring out of him.

Changmin whimpered. He hated this and where the hell was Yunho? Four wolves crept closer to him, one of them was the Alpha who was supposed to deliver the killing bite. Changmin could only watch as they got closer and closer.

Suddenly Junsu was in front of him, shielding the wounded and bloodied Changmin from the wolves. He growled at them and snarled. The other wolves, including the Alpha, stopped in their tracks. Junsu was scared, Changmin knew that. But his protectiveness towards Changmin flooded their bond and it overrode his fear. The Second couldn’t be more proud of his mate. Junsu was keening in his mind, obviously upset because Changmin was hurt.

He wanted to reply, to tell the submissive that he was so proud of him. However there was no time to reassure his mate. One of the wolves lunged at Junsu. However Junsu was quicker, he managed to dodge and even sink his teeth into the wolf’s leg.

And then the other wolves started to move. Moving as one, they growled at Junsu before they began to attack him. Changmin was shouting into their bond. He could feel one of the wolves had gotten his teeth onto Junsu and Junsu yelped in pain. Changmin wanted to move, and miraculously he did. With limping legs he crawled over to the pile of wolves where Junsu was obviously in the middle of and bit one of them, relishing when the wolf cried out in pain.

Some of the wolves now turned their attention back to him. One wolf sunk his teeth to his leg again. Changmin didn’t have any strength left. He fell to the ground, black spots beginning to appear in front of his eyes. He could hear Junsu’s concerned shouting into their mate bond but he couldn’t reply. His mind began to swirl; and he belatedly realized that he might be dying. This was all his fault; if only he didn’t lose control, they could have bought enough time until the rest of Changmin’s pack got there.

Three wolves now crept closer to him. Changmin growled because it was all he could do. He had lost too much blood. One of them bared his teeth, ready to deliver the killing bite to Changmin. Junsu was screaming his name over and over again but he was too busy fighting and couldn’t get closer.

Changmin knew he didn’t have much time left. Everything was swirling, he could hardly see what was in front of him. Through hazy eyes, he thought he saw Yunho’s great grey fur standing in front of him. And then everything went black.

+

Junsu was crying.

It had been many nights since he last cried but somehow this time the tears couldn’t stop falling. Changmin was so pale, he looked like there was no life within him. Junsu’s shouts through their mate bond went unanswered and Changmin was not opening his eyes. The submissive couldn’t feel Changmin at all, it was like Changmin was gone. He had tried to ask his wolf to reach for Changmin’s wolf but it also proved to be useless.

So instead he tried to focus on Siwon who crouched beside Changmin, trying to attend to the Second’s deep gash. Yunho was somewhere in the living room, speaking on the phone with the Marrock. Jaejoong had tried to take Junsu away from Changmin because Junsu was hurt too although not so bad, but he had refused. He wanted to stay near his mate, needed to hear his heart beating because it was the only sign that Changmin was still alive. In the background Donghae and Eunhyuk were speaking in hushed tones.

“This is why we should have a doctor in the pack.”

“Siwon is a doctor.”

“He’s a pediatrician, he deals with kids and food poisoning, not a gaping wound in which Changmin is losing blood by the liter as we speak.”

Junsu whimpered and heard Yoochun shoot the bickering pair a warning growl. Donghae and Eunhyuk obediently shut up. Junsu realized that as a submissive he should’ve tended to his pack first. Yoochun and Yoohwan were so upset when they knew that the wolf pack was going after them. They felt even guiltier because Changmin was now hurt really really bad. As a submissive Junsu should’ve said something to the pair, telling them that it was not their fault.

But he couldn’t. He couldn’t bring himself to say the words because Changmin was not okay. Tears started to gather again in his eyes and Junsu didn’t bother to wipe them away when they rolled down. He just stayed there, hugging his mate as close as possible to hear his beating heart.

Sometime later he heard Yunho speak, “Kangin and Leeteuk are on their way here. They’re bringing Yesung with them too.”

It should’ve brought some peace to Junsu but it didn’t. Yesung was a good doctor, he knew that but he also knew that Yesung could only heal if Changmin managed to survive as they waited for him to arrive. They couldn’t bring Changmin to the hospital, it was too far away and all the jolts in the car ride would’ve just made Changmin’s condition worse. And so they didn’t have any choice except to wait for Yesung.

Yunho caressed Junsu’s head, obviously trying to calm him down. He didn’t say anything and for that Junsu was grateful. If Yunho spoke to him, he would have to reply and he didn’t want to tear his attention away from Changmin, not when this might be the last time he could see Changmin.

If Changmin was dead, Junsu knew he would not be able to live. He would follow his mate even through death.
