Half of the Moon
Chapter Nine
By: Sharl/zielddhy

Changmin was panicking. He nearly drove the car right into the tree just then when Junsu started to scream. He was only touching him, wanting to make sure that the submissive was alright but suddenly the other was screaming his head off.

“Junsu! Junsu! Calm down, shit, calm down!” He pulled over immediately and focused on the werewolf next to him. Junsu was staring at Changmin as if he was someone so frightening; terrified screams still escaped him and Changmin knew it was only a matter of time before Junsu started to get violent and lose control entirely.

Right now there was only one thing he could do. Yunho! Changmin shouted to the pack bond Yunho! Please, I need your help! He slammed the visual of screaming Junsu to their pack bond, uncaring that all pack members would have seen that and maybe some of them were not in the right conditions to see that. But Changmin didn’t care about all that. He was The Second damn it and if he used his dominance to force the other members to stop whatever they were doing right now then so be it.

Almost immediately he could feel his Alpha’s own panic, but it was instantly replaced by a calming wave. Obviously Yunho tried to maintain the pack’s calm. Another presence joined in and Changmin knew it could only mean Jaejoong. Changmin took a deep breath as he blindly reached for Junsu’s presence in the pack bond.

Only to find Junsu was not there.

Well, not entirely not there, he could sense that Junsu was a pack member but other than that, nothing. Junsu was blocking himself from the packs.

“Oh god,” Changmin didn’t know what to do. He never checked on Junsu within the pack bond before so this came as a shock, yet another thing he didn’t know about Junsu. And to be honest, what does he know about him?

“Junsu please,” Changmin was pleading now, “please calm down, I beg you.” He wanted to push into their mate bond so desperately but he knew that if he did that then Junsu just would only be more suspicious of him. And let’s not forget that overprotective wolf of Junsu. Hedwig was keening at the back of Changmin’s consciousness, obviously upset that their mate was acting like this. For the first time in his life Changmin felt utterly helpless and he wanted to cry. Yunho, please, I don’t know what to do. Help me.

Changmin didn’t know what Yunho did, or whether it was Junsu’s own consciousness, or maybe Junsu’s wolf was taking a pity on Changmin, but gradually Junsu stopped screaming. His voice was already hoarse by the time he stopped but at least he had stopped. Changmin sagged down in his seat and tiredly glanced at the passenger seat.

Junsu was shaking so badly, he was curling into the seat with his legs up despite the fact that they were in a sports car that has a very limited space. His eyes were wide and fearful, but somehow they were also empty, as if Junsu was not there. There were tears streaming down his face and Changmin’s heart clenched at the sight of his mate crying.

Suddenly, his phone rang. Changmin didn’t bother looking at the display, he knew who was calling and sure enough Yoohwan’s voice filtered down from the other line. “I’m coming down there with Yunho, tell me where you are and stay there.”

As if Changmin could move right now. He was so emotionally drained that he didn’t have the energy to drive them home. He told Yoohwan where they were and ended the call tiredly. Changmin wished he could hug Junsu, but he knew he couldn’t and he felt so useless.

Because what good does it make him as Junsu’s mate if he could not give him comfort when the submissive needs it the most?

Junsu was asleep by the time Yoohwan and Yunho came, maybe he was finally exhausted and his body couldn’t take it anymore. Yoohwan drove Changmin’s car just in case Junsu woke up sometime on the road, his presence would’ve helped calmed Junsu down. So far he was the closest to Junsu among the other pack members.

Changmin didn’t speak for a while, his mind was still too focused on what the hell just happened. He was just touching him because Junsu seemed scared for some reason and it resulted in a fucking emotional rollercoaster ride. Junsu didn’t like to be touched, that’s for sure but the question here was why he seemed so terrified about it? Something bad must’ve happened and Changmin couldn’t help but feel a bit angry.

Who in the world had dared to hurt and terrify his mate like that?

Finally he couldn’t contain his curiosity anymore, and he addressed his Alpha. He saw Yunho’s grip on the steering wheel tighten for a moment as if contemplating whether to tell Changmin or not.

“I don’t know the details,” Yunho finally replied, “One day Kangin called me and he said that he found a submissive that doesn’t have a pack yet. Because we didn’t have one yet I thought we should give it a go. He only told me that this submissive was badly hurt and very sensitive, but he didn’t elaborate any further details. Leeteuk is the only one who managed to calm him down. Oh, and Ryeowook of course, that guy can be friends with anyone.”

“How did Kangin find him?”

Yunho sighed. “Something about a raid, but I’m not sure myself.”

This time Changmin was the one who sighed. He already suspected that Kangin and Leeteuk were very protective about Junsu. Hell, they even came when Changmin -he winced internally- refused to acknowledge the submissive as his mate that first time. The Marrock wouldn’t do that unless they were attached to Junsu in the first place.

“Min,” Yunho said again, “I don’t know if this helps, but I think neither Kangin nor Leeteuk told us what’s going on with your mate because it’s not their place to tell. If Junsu wants to open up to us, to you, he has to do that on his own free will.”

“But it seems that all I’m doing is just scaring him off again and again,” Changmin’s voice broke at the end and he had to take a deep breath in order to keep his tears at bay. “It feels like every time I make one step forward he takes three steps back.”

The Alpha didn’t answer and Changmin knew why: because it was the truth. There were so many things he wanted to know about his mate but Junsu was not letting him get close. He even closed himself from the pack bond and it wouldn’t be good for the long run. The pack’s balance could’ve been disrupted and knowing Junsu, most likely he didn’t know about that fact. But the question now was how to make Junsu open himself up without forcing him to do so.

He looked outside and watched the night sky, it was almost full moon again. Nearly one month had passed since he first saw Junsu and for all Changmin knew, nothing changed much. He was losing hope and he was losing it fast.

+

Changmin made sure he was the one who carried Junsu back to his room later that night. Stepping into the other’s room for the very first time, he noted how bare it looked compared to his own room. Apart from a bed in the middle, a desk with a chair and a lone chest of drawers, there was almost nothing else. Few books were on the table and they all had library stamps on them so they must’ve been part of the library’s collection. There were no CDs, photographs, posters or anything that might suggest that the room was inhabited.

He watched as Junsu slept and it felt like he was transferred back to their days at the cabin. At least Junsu was not as scared back then as he was now. Changmin knew Junsu even felt happy when they watched the sunrise together so what went wrong? Why were they back at being awkward the moment they rejoined the pack? What did Changmin do?

Junsu stirred slightly, his brows furrowed deeply and Changmin recognized the signs almost immediately. Junsu was having another nightmare. Did this happen almost every night? If so, then why didn’t the submissive ask for help? Hadn’t Changmin been kind enough to let him know that he could trust Changmin? But the biggest question remained: what exactly happened to Junsu?

“What is it that you don’t want me to know?” he whispered to the sleeping man. Changmin resisted the urge to touch Junsu’s cheek, knowing that the slightest touch could’ve woken him up and the last thing he wanted was for Junsu to start screaming again.

Then a horrible thought slithered to his mind. What if Changmin’s touch was the only touch that Junsu couldn’t take? Maybe he had gone too far when he rejected Junsu back then because hadn’t Yunho said that Ryeowook managed to get close to Junsu? And then there was also Yoohwan who Junsu seemed to tolerate enough.

Fuck, Changmin closed his eyes. He had ruined his chance and no matter what he did, he couldn’t make Junsu forgive him. It was all pointless, as if Changmin was fighting a losing battle. He glanced towards the sleeping form on the bed. Only a fool doesn’t know when he’s beaten.

Changmin felt like screaming but somehow his voice wouldn’t cooperate. There was only a huge empty place in his body because his heart had been ripped away from him. The grief was so much, so unbearable. But something went wrong; it must be, because all he could let out was muffled voice, choked sob. And before he knew what was happening, tears started to roll down. Alone, in his mate’s room, The Second cried.

The first thing Junsu noticed when he woke up was the bright sunlight that seeped through from the curtain. He didn’t realize he had left the window open yesterday. He blinked once to get rid from the sleepiness, but his eyes felt heavy. He shifted slightly and managed to see someone sitting on his desk. He frowned, what was Jaejoong doing here?

As if the Alpha’s mate knew that Junsu had woken up, Jaejoong was suddenly standing near him. In his hand was a glass of lemonade. Junsu sat up and gratefully sipped on the refreshing beverage. “Thank you,” he croaked out only to realize that his voice was hoarse. He cleared his throat, but it wasn’t doing it much good.

Jaejoong poured some more lemonade. “Drink some more; it’ll help your voice.”

Junsu obeyed. The lemonade did sooth his throat, but why was it hoarse in the first place? Was he screaming yesterday? The last thing he remembered was in the car with Changmin when the dominant picked him up.

“You’ve been sleeping for three days straight,” Jaejoong’s voice broke his musing. “And it’s a good thing you woke up now, it’s the full moon today.”

Junsu was surprised. He hadn’t realized that he had been sleeping for so long. He must’ve been more exhausted than he realized. What had happened since then? What about his work in the library and in the school? Hopefully Donghae had made some excuses to the headmistress, and Yunho did the same to the library.

Jaejoong was staring at him worriedly. “Hopefully you’re feeling better now Junsu, because I have few things that you need to know.” He sat down on the bed, looking more determined than Junsu ever saw him.

“As I’ve told you earlier, today is the full moon and we will have a hunt tonight. But Changmin won’t be joining us,” Junsu frowned, but Jaejoong didn’t let him interrupt. “Right now he’s at Kangin’s pack because he’s not sure he could control his sexual urge around you during the full moon. He has spent two days there and I don’t know what he’s doing there. Yunho wouldn’t tell me and in fact he forbade me from speaking about this to you.”

The Alpha’s mate bit his lip. “And now he’s a bit angry with me, but I know that you need to know this. You have a mate Junsu, and regardless of what has happened to you, whatever you choose to do, it would impact Changmin too. So think wisely.” Jaejoong smiled at him, “Now I’ll bring you something to eat shortly, take some more rest in the meantime.”

Junsu stared at Jaejoong’s retreating form. The other’s words were still ringing in his head. What does it mean, regardless of whatever Junsu chooses to do, it would impact Changmin too? He hadn’t done anything that might hurt his mate had he? Junsu was always mindful to stay clear from the other’s way so how could he hurt Changmin?

Suddenly everything that happened that night came back to him. And Junsu remembered all of it: the jeers, the mocking faces from his old pack, his old Alpha fucking him and finally somebody who touched his body for real. This time he could think more clearly. It must have been Changmin who touched him and Junsu, being the stupid wolf he was, couldn’t distinguish which one was reality and which one was from his memories.

His body began to shake, he must have hurt Changmin deeply that night. Not physically, because it was impossible to hurt someone much more dominant than him, but emotionally. Junsu gulped. He wanted to know what’s going on, but Changmin was not here. He was at The Marrock’s pack because he didn’t think he could’ve controlled himself around Junsu. He was afraid of hurting him while in fact, it was Junsu who had hurt him.

Junsu had to make sure Changmin was alright and so he tore down the block he had on their mate bond and searched for Changmin.

Instantly he could see where Changmin was. His mate was in a silver cage. He could feel Changmin’s body weakened, the silver started to seep on his body. How long had he been there? But Junsu could also see Kangin as he stood outside the cage, looking at Changmin worriedly so he wasn’t the one who put Changmin there.

So Changmin must’ve entered the silver cage willingly but why?

Then Jaejoong’s words came back to him: ‘he’s not sure he could control his sexual urge around you during the full moon.’

In the midst of confusion, everything clicked and Junsu understood what’s going on. Because he had screamed when Changmin merely touched him, The Second made sure that he wasn’t anywhere near Junsu around the full moon. And he had to be caged in silver to ensure that Changmin wouldn’t go back to where Junsu was because even though the Marrock was there, Kangin had his own pack to handle and this was the safest way.

For the first time in long time, Junsu understood the implications of his actions. And most importantly, what it would do to his mate.

He curled on the bed, feeling helpless listening to Changmin’s painful whine through their mate bond. He didn’t want to block it again because the least he could do right now was sharing his mate’s pain. There was only one thing Junsu kept repeating over and over in his head as tears poured down rapidly. I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry.
